EDITORIAL NOTE: The district attorney's office of Middlesex County reported a fatal accident on Wednesday. On Thursday morning, they corrected their earlier statement and said that no deaths had been reported.

At least five people – including two children – were injured in a chain reaction accident involving eight vehicles on Route 1 in Edison during the Wednesday night raid, officials said.

A motorist suffered critical injuries in the wreck, which occurred at 17:20 on the southbound highway near Prince Street, said police spokesman Lt. Robert Dudash in a statement.

The accident involved a semi-trailer and minivan with six other cars. Edison Firefighters slashed five heavily damaged cars to free trapped drivers, community officials said in the statement.

"Many of the people who were removed from these vehicles suffered cuts, scratches, and complained of legs, back and shoulder pain," said Edison Fire Captain Andy Toth.

Procuratorate, the Middlesex County Department of Dangerous Goods, The State Department of Transportation and Local Forces remained on Wednesday night's site.

The highway was closed after a police warning from Main to Prince Street.
