16 best devices of the year from Apple to Bose, Sonos to Sony

<div _ngcontent-c14 = "" innerhtml = "

With 2018 slipping in 2019, take a look at the year's best, sweetest, and glossiest tech developments, and most of all, they liked it were independently selected and there are no related links.

Apple iPhone XR in white. David Phelan

In the last 12 months, real innovations, striking design improvements and, above all, numerous articles have been published under "more of them".

In addition to the most expensive smartphones (assuming you do not count gold-plated iPhones or luxury brand Vertu products), there were modest new releases. In addition to the expensive Apple Watch Series 4, there were low-priced trackers and watches from Xiaomi and Huawei.

Chinese brands were in the spotlight for a good reason (Huawei, Xiaomi, OnePlus had blockbuster products) and bad (Huawei was thrown by governments that wanted to keep the company out of national infrastructure projects).

So, what were the tech standouts and should you buy them or will there be improvements in 2019 that you should wait for instead?

Smart Watches

Apple Watch Infograph face including heart rate complication. David Phelan

The Apple Watch Series 4 was by far outstanding here. You can read my full review here.

The sleek new design and larger screen with charming curved screen corners were a major upgrade to an already appealing product. And it has been clearer than ever that a flag has been set in the sand that the Apple Watch is a health device designed to improve our lives. The activity monitoring was already very good and the latest software, which works on all first versions of the Apple Watch, was also a big step forward. Like some other trackers, watchOS 5 now automatically detects when you take a walk outdoors, and politely asks you after a few minutes to record the entire run.

However, the real progress has been made in the Series 4 hardware with improved heart rate monitoring. The big change is the ability to perform an ECG measurement that is currently live only in the US.

However, there is also a case detection if you have suffered a fall. Both functions may have saved lives when the year has expired.

Competitors of 2018 were the Fitbit Versa Samsung Galaxy Watch and Withings Steel HR Sport .

[2019001001] For 2019, Withings could be the name to focus on: reborn, since it has parted with its short time as a Nokia department, it feels like a brand that could surprise us all.

Smartphones

Huawei Mate 20 Pro David Phelan

Two outstanding points in a year that foamed with possibility: Apple's iPhone XR (here at a glance) and the Huawei Mate 20 Pro . This second phone is still hard to buy in the US, but it's still worth listening to even if I can not link to it. In terms of innovation, Huawei beat everyone else with a 7nm processor announced before Apple, the first fingerprint sensor embedded in the screen of a mass-market handset and two-way charging. The last one was my favorite: not only was it incredibly cool, it also had a sense of decent generosity. If you missed the furor, it works that way. The Mate 20 Pro is a phone that is charged wirelessly via a Qi charger. So far, what do you say? You can also send the fee in the other direction. Turn on the function – it will only stay live for a few minutes to save power – and push it to the back of another Qi-compatible phone, even if it's not a Huawei. As soon as the phones touch, the other one is charged. Oh my god, but it's satisfying.

Of course, a fingerprint sensor embedded in the display so that you touch the screen of your phone to unlock it is quite a big news. OnePlus and Xiaomi also have this feature. It is very neat and satisfying to use. Until the competitors can build to Apple as fast and secure as Face ID, this placement for a fingerprint sensor is by far the best. Expect that 2019 will bring much more.

Oh, and the camera of the Mate 20 Pro is pretty impressive. It has three sensors and a hard-working artificial intelligence to distinguish photos of dogs, cats, pandas (I'm kidding). Huawei has probably made the phone of the year.

Apple iPhone XR in lip-shaped coral surface. Apple

But Apple has produced a cell phone that I think could be one of the bestselling iPhones. It seems that the sale was not as outstanding as the company hoped, but no one can better adjust prices or increase marketing to fix it. Apple's latest colorful phone, the iPhone 5c, took a while to become popular – as prices fell, it was ubiquitous for years to come.

And oh man, it's a great phone. The processor is amazingly fast and able to bring machine learning to every part of the experience. The camera is huge (although portrait mode is annoyingly limited to humans) and the inclusion of the largest battery ever built into an iPhone makes its presence truly noticeable. If the fear of the battery really is (and is) the disease of the 21st century, then the XR comes closer to the solution than most others.

Honorable Mention goes to the Sony Xperia XZ3 the best-looking screen on a smartphone so far, and the Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro a chic, yet somewhat unobtrusive performer, which is likely to be another sleeper. It is not available in the USA yet.

Sleep tech

Boses new sleepbuds. Lee Bell

Bose Sleepbuds are noteworthy: incredibly lightweight earphones that lead you to the land of pitching with soft tones. They fit so comfortably that you do not realize they're there, and are close enough to keep the bulk of the real world at bay even before you pick your slumbers. I believe that sleep technology will become an increasingly important part of our lives. If we slept better, we would undoubtedly live better, and this is increasingly recognized. The sleeping area of Headspace is a rescuer for sleep disorders everywhere and I suspect 2019 will be the year when Apple gets into sleep monitoring. Perhaps Apple Watch Series 5 will eventually contribute to the sleep functions we need, an area currently dominated by Withings .

Laptops

The Apple MacBook Air features a state-of-the-art keyboard. Apple

I do not intend to play Harp on Apple, but the Apple MacBook Air is simply mind-blowing. It looks great, especially in its fruity gold finish (though that looks a bit too pink in some lights), and the company is trying to push the limits again, as it did ten years ago on the first MacBook Air was. It costs more than last year's model (still available at a bargain price), but fixes just about every problem that has grown in the last decade. Do you want a display that is quite brimming, but still has room for a webcam at the top and is now flush with no frame? Check. Do you want the lush keyboard otherwise available only on the latest MacBook Pro models? Check. How About a Touch ID Button to Unlock the Laptop? Check. Everything in a frame that is still super slim and unruly light.

Intelligent Home

Nest Hello Video Doorbell Nest

Earlier in the year I tried the Video Doorbell Nest Hello and at that time it was good, but since then it has grown for me. Deliveries when you're on the move are another modern issue. That solves it. It is true that sometimes it takes 20 seconds for the notification to reach me, that someone rings the bell, but I have not missed a single caller since I had it. Of course, it can be a surprise if the man holding the package says "I'm not home", but they adapt quickly and it's not unusual to see her face smile when she does understand what's going on. Once, when a neighbor called and I said that I was just going home, it became the topic of conversation for many days. But it's not just about me, I suppose. The Hello is a powerful, efficient and good-looking device that's a bit of a lifestyle.

Google Home Hub. Google

.

It works with the new Google Home Hub and will play well in the future with the Amazon Echo Show . Especially the new show is another gadget that quickly became an indispensable element in my house thanks to its attractive, large display and sleek, responsive interface.

Expect that by 2019, many more smart screens will be integrated into the lights, heating and switches of our home.

Audio Products

Sonos Beam. Sonos

Two Astonishing Products in the Audio World: Sonos Beam is a compact but highly effective soundbar that sounds as good as any TV. As you would expect from Sonos, it's immaculately built, a breeze that's easy to use thanks to intuitive controls and professionally tuned audio playback. The largest rooms can still benefit from the bigger Sonos Playbase, but in truth there is not much in it.

Sony WH-1000XM3 – impressive wireless noise cancelers. Sony

The second audio gadget that requires your attention is a headphone: The [WH] 1000XM3 from Sony offers the best noise cancellation I've ever experienced. I asked the technician about noise suppression, because if he gets it wrong, he can be very efficient, but he has such a dark feeling. One can imagine that one hears one meter below. The Sony guru explained that the sound they are aiming for is a living silence, like that expectant silence hovering in the air between the movements in a concert hall. That's a good thing, and Sony makes it possible.

Next year, we'll probably be getting Apple's AirPods 2, and they really can not come too fast.

Away Larger Carry-on Aluminum Edition. Away Travel

But, you know, if I had to pick an item that made the biggest difference in my life in the last 12 months, that's none of it. It's a suitcase with the gentlest technical references: The Away Larger Carry-On Suitcase is just gorgeous. The aluminum edition model is more expensive than the rest, but it looks so stunning that it's hard to resist. Like a high-end Rimowa, but at a fraction of the price, it's well-built, thoughtful and a real eye-catcher. The carry-on luggage comes in two sizes and the larger one is just a little bit deeper, in which you can fit much more. The technology is limited to two elements that are both useful: a TSA look, so that the authorities can check the content without damaging the content and a powerful battery. The key is that it can be ejected, so if you need to check in your bag, you can.
