SPRINGFIELD, VA. (AP) – Virginia Department of Health officials state that two people have died and 18 others have been hospitalized for an outbreak of the respiratory virus in an age community.
According to the Fairfax County Health Department, 54 out of 263 residents of the Greenspring Retirement Community in Springfield, Virginia, were exposed to the outbreak. In the past two weeks, the sick residents have shown symptoms such as cough, fever and pneumonia.
Ministry of Health officials said they had quarantined parts of the building where the infection was suspected. Greenspring will not pick up any new residents as the outbreak is being investigated. Health Ministry spokesman Benjamin Schwartz said the two deceased patients were hospitalized with pneumonia but are "elderly with complex medical problems."
