Although I do not really like crossover coupes as a segment, the truth is that people are buying them – BMW has sold around 200,000 X4s worldwide since 2014. And while I see the second generation 2019 X4 "Sport Activity Test Coupe" near his birthplace in Spartanburg, South Carolina, I can somehow see why. Along the challenging roads that climb and dive through the mountains, the performance kills of the X4 really grow on me.
In Sport mode, the X4 xDrive30i is tightly wrapped around bends. The 20-inch wheels (19-inch standard) are encased in 245/45 R20 front tires and 275/40 R20 rear tires by Bridgestone Alenza. The optional adaptive suspension prevents the body from slipping all over. Steering weight is a little too heavy and feedback is missing, but the answer is almost instant and the brakes scrub the speed. The new X4 has a wider track and a lower center of gravity than its predecessor, two features that automatically improve overall handling.

When I am out of the mountains and on flat terrain, the comfort mode smoothes the behavior of the X4. The steering becomes lighter, the suspension softens for better driving performance, and the powertrain makes for more relaxed driving. Surprisingly, there is not much tire noise from the wide 20 incher at the corners, nor is wind noise a problem on the highway, especially thanks to the slippery C4 of 0.30.
The quiet interior of the X4 is something that I experienced in the X3, which was redesigned for the 2018 model year. The cabin is nicely equipped with comfortable seats and there are plenty of storage compartments. Rear passengers enjoy an extra inch of legroom compared to the old X4, there is 18.5 cubic feet of cargo space in the hatch, or 50.5 with the rear seats folded flat. This is usable space, but much less than the 28.7 / 62.7 measurements of the X3.
Like the X3, the X4 also uses BMW's latest iDrive 6 infotainment system with a 10.25-inch center-console touchscreen. This infotainment package features navigation, a 12-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, voice recognition, and BMW's weird gesture controls for adjusting volume and answering or rejecting phone calls. IDrive's various menus work intuitively and the system quickly scrolls between screens, while the navigation system boasts beautiful map images and directs me to all waypoints without any problem.
Other optional technical treats include a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot It supports up to 10 devices and a wireless charging pad in the center console – a good thing, because the X4 only comes with two USB ports. One year Apple CarPlay feature is standard, but after that, you have to pay $ 80 a year to use this feature, which is disappointing, but at least BMW does not charge a $ 300 flat fee any more. On the security front: adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring, a 360-degree camera and head-up display are optional. An active lane keeping assistance system is also available that works well even in some higher speed bends.
You can also opt for more power; BMW will gladly sell you the X4 in M40i form. More punch comes from a 3.0-liter turbo I6 engine, with 355 hp and 365 lb-ft of torque on the tap, to get that X4 at 4.6 mph in 4.6 seconds. A more tuned adaptive suspension and larger M sport brakes are standard, while a torque-controlled rear differential and optional 20- or 21-inch wheels are available.
A short three-lap race in the M40i The test track of the BMW Performance Center is a feast for the eyes. The back end turns playfully as it is pushed through the corners. Very tight bends still cause the front tires to wash out, but all in all, the M40i is incredibly powerful despite its size and shape. Not that anyone buys an X4 for track use, mind you.
The BMW X4 from 2019 now hits the dealers, the Mercedes-Benz GLC coupe-place in the sights. Base xDrive30i models start at $ 51,445, and the hotter M40i will command $ 61,445. Both prices include $ 995 for the destination.
Like all these SUV Coupé things, the X4 in my brain is hard to rationalize. The old-fashioned looks and practical concessions to a traditional SUV – like the X3 – just make no sense. Nonetheless, the X4 is as comfortable and great as the more conventional X3, and its lankier form helps it stand out. 200,000 people can not be wrong.
