As we see it, the main competitors of the X7 will be its German competitors, theand Audi's Tried . All three can accommodate seven passengers, so you can pack the rest of your wealthy brood for a family outing. We also expect the X7 to compete with the grandparents of the big luxury SUV world: the Range Rover and Lincoln's .
Some of the key differences between our five SUVs are the choice of engines. Of the five vehicles, only Mercedes offers a true performance-oriented variant, the GLS63, although the Range Rover SVAutobiography Dynamic comes close. BMW offers with its X7 xDrive50i a V8 with turbocharger and Mercedes GLS can also be driven with a twin-turbo V8. The strongest engine option from Audi in the Q7 is a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6, a motor that will not just shatter the pillars of the sky.
The Range Rover comes with a bevy of engine options, including a plug-in hybrid, a V6 supercharged compressor, a V8 supercharger, and a diesel. The more powerful version of the Rangies V8 comes closest to the AMG in terms of brutality. The Navigator is equipped with only one engine, the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6, which is also used in the Ford Raptor.
If history proves to be a guideline, we're sure BMW will introduce more powertrain variants as the X7 Series. Time goes on, but at the moment there are only two options:

While the styling is unbelievably subjective, the early reaction of the Internet Peanut Gallery suggests that the size of the X7's kidney screens exceeds the limits of good taste. It's a polarizing vehicle, but some people will love it. The Audi is the most restrained of them all. It does not push the design sleeve at all, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. The Benz is big and elaborate, with many character lines and creases, but it's less aggressive than the Bimmer and more stylized than the Audi.
The Navigator has a lot of chrome and is more upright (maybe it reflects his truck roots), but he's pretty anyway. The Range Rover is an iteration on a topic, but we think the current generation Rangie is one of the most attractive versions that has been around for a long time.
The X7 falls in the pricing in the mid-pack. The X7 xDrive40i starts at $ 74,895, while the X7 xDrive50i starts at $ 93,695. The smaller Audi Q7 is rated much more aggressive. The base premium trim starts at $ 50,875 thanks in part to a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. With the supercharged V6 under the bonnet, the top tier Prestige model starts at $ 66,475.
The Mercedes-Benz GLS class, at 71,145 US dollars, is a bit cheaper than the X7, but thanks to the 577-hp AMG variant, the top price of the GLS stands at a whopping 127,145 US dollars. The GLS550 – starting at $ 96,745 – is pretty much on par with the X7 xDrive50i.
The Navigator is on par with our three Germans, but the Range Rover, with its mix of engine options, wheelbases, and trim levels, can stretch the price north of $ 200,000, embarrassing the "curious" AMG.

Technology and Safety
The X7 has a healthy standard specification, including a 12.3-inch dashboard in the instrument cluster, complemented by a 12.3-inch infotainment screen above the center stack. Other standard features include a 20GB hard drive navigation system, in-car WiFi, six USB ports, wireless charging and a 205W audio system with 10 speakers. A Harman Kardon Premium audio system is standard on the X7 xDrive50i.
The Audi Q7 and the Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class are not quite as technical. The Q7 comes standard with a 7-inch infotainment screen, 10-speaker audio system and satellite radio. However, the prestige trim Q7 incorporatesembedded navigation, satellite radio, a 558-watt Bose 19-speaker audio system and Audi's popular 12.3-inch cockpit display.
The navigator is not exactly up to date, but he's not in the Stone Age either. It features Ford's much-improved Sync 3 system with a prominently placed 8.0-inch touchscreen. The optional Revel stereo is great and can hang with the Bang & Olufsen device in the Benz and is much nicer than the Bose system in the Audi. The Range Rover's basic meridian system is good, but the optional reference system is something completely different.
The Range Rover's dual-screen infotainment layout is slow, a huge improvement over previous offerings, but still feels slow compared to iDrive or newer versions of Benz's COMAND setup.
Although Mercedes-Benz GLS450 is much more expensive than the base Q7, it is not much better with its standard technology. All you get is a 7-inch display, HD radio and an SD card reader. The GLS550 has a little more flash with its 8-inch screen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, embedded navigation, satellite radio, and a Harman Kardon audio system, but has Mercedes' ingenious newthat did not make that jump into this platform yet.
The robust line of standard X7 driver assistance systems complies with its wealth of standard tech. With the large Bimmer you get an automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic warning, traffic sign recognition and a lane departure warning
The xDrive50i parks with the help of front and rear parking parallel sensors and a 360-degree camera system. There is also front cross traffic warning, a heads-up display, lane departure warning and hands-free cruise control. In addition, the xDrive50i features semi-autonomous driving features such as automatic lane change, autonomously assisted collision avoidance, automatic high beam and adaptive LED headlights.
The Q7 and GLS, on the other hand, are older platforms and thus their standard list Security technology is not that long. The Q7 comes as standard with an automatic emergency brake function as well as front and rear parking sensors. The Prestige panel adds LED headlights, blind spot monitoring and 360 degree camera coverage.
If you switch to the GLS450, you will receive anti-collision braking, a driver attention monitor, and a rain sensor wiper. The GLS550 adds adaptive LED headlights with automatic high beam, blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning and autonomous parallel parking with a 360 degree camera.
The Navigator comes with a number of advanced driver assistance systems, including spot surveillance, adaptive cruise control, self-parking capability and more, but nothing particularly revolutionary for the segment. The Range Rover ADAS suite is similar, but has a range of off-road systems that make driving fun and safer on a dirt track.
The maximum load capacity of the BMW X7 corresponds to its price: it is in the middle of the pack with 90.4 cubic feet. The smaller Q7 offers significantly less cargo space – only 71.6 cubic feet. This is comparable to SUVs, which are a whole size class along the food chain. The comparatively cavernous GLS could almost swallow smaller SUVs with 93.8 cubic meters of cargo space.
In summary, we will not know for sure until we drive it, but the BMW looks like a good bet if you want a big three-row SUV with all the latest and greatest technology and can stand the look. The Audi remains a great bargain option if you're willing to live with the smaller freight capacity and older infotainment and security system architecture. The GLS is probably the prettiest of the whole series, will demand the most from the three Germans and can be equipped with a sweet, hand-built AMG V8.
The big American takes the cake when it comes to having an extended cargo area. With folded seats (and with a bench in the second row), the Navigator L will hold 120.2 cubic feet of whatever. The shorter version will hold an impressive 103.3 cubic meters. The Range Rover must assume that you have a servant who will carry your possessions for you, because he has the smallest boot of the bundle at only 65.5 cubic feet. Interestingly, the long wheelbase version is identical to the short version in bearing capacity.

Head and Legroom
Headroom is important in any vehicle, and if you have a long torso or a graceful neckline, look in the direction of the big Benz, for he is leading the pack in front of the head clearance with a nap around 42 inches. Things are not bad in the second row, even for the Mercedes, where he hangs on the nose with the short wheelbase of Lincoln at 40 inches. The way back is not really meant for tall people, but in the Benz, which has the most vertical room at 38.9 inches, they may not be too miserable.
Legroom is a problem for everyone because no one likes to wedge their knees into a dashboard or a seat back. Lincoln offers the most space to stretch your front seat stems over 43 inches, and the Range Rover sits on the back of the pack at just 39.2 inches. In the second row it becomes interesting thanks to the long version of the Navigator and the Range Rover. The third-row passenger usually gets the slightest consideration where legroom is concerned. The Navigator has the most with 36.1 inches, which is OK for a smaller adult. Conversely, if you expect to drive in an Audi Q7, do not voluntarily sit in the third row, unless you are able to squeeze in tight spaces, otherwise you will have a bad time, thanks to the 29 , 2 inches the space that the engineers in Ingolstadt, Germany assigned to you.

As far as driving pleasure is concerned and how all these different values for space and drivetrain are felt in the real world, we have to wait until we can get our hands on the BMW X7 from 2019 for a proper first test  until then, Audi, Mercedes and the rest of the three-row premium SUV firmament should better keep their backs, because the gigantic radiator grille of the X7 is likely to overtax the rearview mirror.
