2019 Mazda 3 First driving report

  Corey lewis

We traveled to the small, traffic-free city of Los Angeles last week to test the newly redesigned 2019 Mazda 3, the first product to be introduced under the automaker's equally new premium philosophy. The next-generation compact class apparently announces the introduction of other high-end models.

Is this all-important basic compact car good at all? Let's find out.

(Disclaimer: Mazda had flown me from Cincinnati to Los Angeles and taken me to a very nice West Hollywood hotel, they also provided me with food and drink, a notebook and a pen.)

New Aspirational New Car

The new 3 is a first-class car for Mazda. It is the first to offer a new KODO design language for all other models, the first to feature the innovative Skyactiv X engine, the first to be built on a redesigned Skyactiv vehicle architecture, and the first 3 with four-wheel drive in North America . The expected Skyactiv X engine will soon be added to the 3 lineup (not specific), coupled with a new M-Hybrid system for better fuel economy.

Mazda told me that there will be no Mazdaspeed 3, as it does not fit the company's new premium image. Well there.

Since all test cars were premium trim front-wheel drive automobiles in sedan, there will be a test event in a few months – This four-wheel drive car has a snowy climate. We've already covered the pricing information, so read it when you're in the mood to buy.

If you're wondering, the test car pictured here will ask your Mazda dealer $ 26,500 this spring.

Mazda regretted the coupe-like styling of the previous 3 and this time stuck to a more traditional three-box form. Subjectively, the smooth, more serious lines are an improvement on the initial model. The wider, chrome-framed grille is now without a smile. For 2019, door handles are a one-piece unit without the need to interrupt a key for keyless entry (the handle is touch-sensitive). The door handle moved with a smooth and lightweight movement, and the door operation produced a quality "thunk" both inside and out.

This shade is new for 2019; Mazda uses a redesigned paint process with a black basecoat and a tinted clearcoat for this color only. Unfortunately, on the roof above the doors appeared a light orange peel. The alignment of the outer sides in terms of fairings, trunk and door trim was excellent.

A red leather interior is exclusive to the tailgates. Soft-touch surfaces may be surprising everywhere. The leather feels soft and high-quality, and the seams throughout the cabin are even and without wrinkles. The upper door panels and dashboard are made of soft rubber, while the trim is a (convincing), padded and stitched faux leather.

Hands grab a sewn leather wheel. In the new 3-passenger cabin, Mazda's philosophy is "less is more", without the button-facing that can be found in many modern cars. The overall impression is decidedly horizontal supported by a metal strip that runs over the doors, over the integrated door pull (a nice touch), over the dashboard and around the vents. The only hard plastics are under this metal strip.

We set points for the sunshade and sunglasses holder, both of which looked weak and had an afterthought.

The first part of the trip consisted of all the traffic, so we had time to deal with the 3 in low speed traffic. Noteworthy in the loud traffic was the soundproofing in the cabin. Buses and trucks nearby were well muffled behind the wheel.

At idle, no noise or vibration releases the 2.5-liter presence. This engine is the only option at launch for the 3 in the United States, which delivers 186 hp and 186 Nm of torque. A bother came from the six-speed automatic, because in the stop-and-go traffic lights throttled throttle inputs, which should roll the car forward, sometimes to a sloppy circuit. I have noticed this on more than one occasion between the first and third gear, and it has always been under slight throttling. In all other situations, the transmission went smoothly and very well and slid through the corridors precisely and without hesitation.

The power felt sufficient for the overtaking maneuvers, and the ride remained controlled and calm. While the track of the car was repeatedly dragged from the wheel, this can be permanently switched off. On the reversing track with the needle around half the dial, the cabin proved remarkably relaxed. The tire noise of the Toyo Proxes was distant and quiet. The only other noticeable sound was some wind around the side mirror. In terms of sound, the Bose stereo made for good clarity – and bass. In a new stereo methodology for Mazda, the subwoofers are now in the fender and not in the cabin. Bose offers you four additional speakers compared to the standard setup (12 in total). There is also an option to make the stereo driver-oriented or suitable for all passengers. In the tests, this attitude has made a decisive difference.

Once we were in the mountains, we swapped the freeway for a two-lane road where the locals really let go, and I made a game of following a particularly wild character who controls an Accord. Elevation differences and blind, rocky curves were abundant. The navigation supported our trip with a 3-D feature that maps the road height. Learning the medium-heavy steering was a quick exercise as the front went every where it showed. Tires made for good grip, only in corners I scrubbed a bit too hot. The weight shift was smooth and predictable as I threw the sedan around. My passenger noticed that although he was able to feel my steering corrections through the bends (I have great skills, of course), the chassis has absorbed the corrections without the ride being chopped off. Choosing a suitable braking force was never a challenge.

In the mountains there were some decent straight stretches, and there I was disappointed twice. Although the engine is generally responsive, I found that when 15 to 20 percent of the pedal movement was left, using was said that driving and burial did not result in more acceleration; I was already at full speed. No downshift, no additional speed. I am not sure if this dead space in the pedal is intentional or a coincidence.

The seats (redesigned this year) proved to be comfortable and supportive throughout the ride, with more backward motion and more flexibility in the lower pillow thigh support. A considerable amount of upholstery welcomes the driver, and the headrests do not aggressively push forward, as in some new cars. The driver's seat is multi-engine, while the passenger is manually adjustable. I hopped back for a moment, and the back bench felt generally comfortable. There is something missing on the backrest that could be expected in this class, and with the driver's seat fitted for my 6-foot frame, my knees are pressed against the front seat.

I put the on-board computer back before the ride. After the pretty rough route, our tester returned 25.6 mpg.

Conclusion of Conflict

At the end of the journey I had two different feelings: those who are impressed and also affected. The impressed feeling came from numerous areas. The car feels good and solid; Mazda's has put a lot of effort into the interior, the materials and the significant reduction of NVH. It's fun to drive, drives well, has a refined engine and offers a lot of premium trim equipment. But the premium is my concern.

Mazda knew he needed to improve his game to be considered a top-notch rival, and I think that's what makes this new version 3 higher than typical compact competitors while remaining among the premium marques , Time will tell if this strategy works for customers. However, if a compact buyer is willing to pay a little more than the Japanese brand on the street, he will get a solid car.
