The new Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupé
A coupe for high demands
The new GLE Coupé is another example of Mercedes-Benz's strategy to meet all customers' needs Targeted premium SUV segment. From a relatively small niche, the segment of SUVs, the SUV coupes, has quickly become a trend. With the renewal of the premium SUV family, Mercedes-Benz is also putting the GLE Coupé on a new technical footing.
"The GLE Coupé combines the imposing power of an off-road vehicle with the emotionally appealing sportiness and elegance of a 'coupé," says Gorden Wagener, design director of Daimler AG. "The sensuous, reduced styling in combination with the extreme proportions creates a unique design Statment. "
Like the GLE and the GLS, the GLE Coupé is being built as a member of the large premium SUV family in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, with a total of eight SUV models in the form of the GLA, the The GLC, the G-Class and the new GLB are currently used in the GLC Coupé, which currently accounts for around one-third of sales, and which are an important structural pillar in the Mercedes-Benz product portfolio and contribute significantly to the brand's growth six million customers opted for a Mercedes-Benz SUV.
Exterior design: powerful presence
The new GLE Coupé is stately 4939 mm long and 2010 mm br (39 mm longer and 7 mm wider than its predecessor). The wheelbase has grown by 20 mm compared to its predecessor, but remains 60 mm shorter than that of the GLE, which is advantageous for both sporty handling and appearance. The proportions underline the dynamics of the GLE Coupé.
The front view combines the characteristics of the Mercedes-Benz SUV family with clear coupé attributes: the diamond grille with the only horizontal grid points to the other coupes in the Mercedes-Benz series. The openings in the blind now show the SUV character, as well as the glossy chromed underrun protection in the front apron. On the AMG Line, the radiator grille widens down in A-shape and the pins in the diamond radiator grille are finished in chrome.
The headlamps are equipped as standard with full-LED technology.
The flatter windshield not only makes the vehicle look more dynamic; It also fits better with the roofline with rearward slope and radiates harmonious elegance. The edge underneath is deliberately soft and surface-accentuated and effectively emphasizes the large, flush wheels (19 to 22 inches). The black plastic panels of the wheel arches (painted to vehicle color for AMG Line) and the optional footboard in between emphasize the SUV character.
The dynamics of the coupé line are particularly evident in the rear design. Below the C-pillar, a broad muscle protrudes from the surface of the vehicle's side, which begins in the rear side door and includes the taillights. This muscle gives the GLE Coupé its powerful, jumpy look. Together with the slim and elongated rear lights, it underlines the width of the stern. The autonomous, two-part tail lights, with their distinctive round blocks in slim form, blend into the characteristic day and night design of the Mercedes-Benz SUV rear lights. The flush-to-floor transition from the tailgate to the bumper, the license plate in the bumper above the high-gloss chrome-plated underrun protection and the integrated tailpipe trim elements complete the synthesis of Coupé and SUV.
Interior design: Coupé without restrictions The interior of the new GLE Coupé has many similarities with the other models of the new premium SUV family, with the sporty aspect clearly highlighted. The modern cockpit is familiar with two large screens in the format of 31.2 cm and the strikingly shaped dashboard, which is divided horizontally by a decorative element and flows seamlessly into the door trim. The upper side of the GLE Coupé comes as standard with ARTICO imitation leather. The sporty accent set the standard sports seats with particularly good side guide, which are equipped with an ARTICO cover and the new sports steering wheel with nappa leather edge, which is also standard in the coupe.
The SUV touch, is complemented by the high center console with the dominant handles. The high-quality styling and the processing of all surfaces and features as well as the impressive ergonomics convey a contemporary and luxurious impression. Of course, there are extensive possibilities for customization in the selection of decorations and materials, which can raise the sporting theme in the GLE Coupé to a whole new level and demonstrate the craftsmanship quality of real luxury products. Leather seat covers and door panels made of nappa leather in the color combination Classic Red / Black are available exclusively in coupe.
As spacious as they are: made-to-measure sport
The line of the four-door coupé The body was deliberately cut narrower than the GLE and offers noticeably more space than its predecessor, so that up to five passengers can comfortably sit down. This is because the wheelbase is 60 mm shorter than the SUV GLE, but 20 mm longer than the predecessor coupe. This benefits the seat and legroom of the occupants. The input dimension was even increased by 35 mm. In many places, the new family member offers improvements to the internal dimensions, which lead to a significantly better sense of space. The capacity of the storage compartments in the interior has been increased to a total of 40 liters. The sports suit is figure-hugging cut – but feels comfortable in the hand. The all-round visibility has also been improved and the optional sunroof paneling is larger.
The trunk is already generous in the standard state with 655 liters and hides in this position its cargo under a high-quality, hinged and removable cover with magnets attached. The 40:20:40 folding backrest of the rear seats increases the trunk to up to 1790 liters – 70 liters more than in the predecessor and a best in this segment. It increases the flat cargo space over two meters in length and, if necessary, to a minimum width of 1080 mm – both improvements of 87 or 72 mm compared to its predecessor. The loading sill is inherently higher than conventional SUVs – but here too, the new GLE Coupé is about 60 mm better than its predecessor, and when equipped with AIRMATIC, the rear can even be lowered by a further 50 mm at the touch of a button.
Must be experienced: Mercedes-Benz User Experience
The GLE Coupé offers the latest generation of the MBUX infotainment system (Mercedes-Benz User Experience). The information on the instrument cluster and the media display are clearly legible on the large, high-resolution screens. An emotional presentation with brilliant graphics underlines the comprehensibility of the intuitive operating structure.
The familiar online voice control LINGUATRONIC and the learning abilities of MBUX are of course on board as well as a variety of comfort options and apps that can be integrated MBUX or controlled with it.
Music streaming also from Amazon
In the course of the year 2020, Mercedes-Benz will integrate the music streaming service Amazon Music into the new SUV models. If the customer has an Amazon Music account, they can transfer their music to the vehicle via the Mercedes me "Online Music" service. Individual songs, playlists or music from the desired genre can be played by touch or voice input. Amazon Prime members have two million songs to choose from, including $ 50 million for Amazon Music Unlimited. The music streaming service TIDAL will continue to be available.
Powerful six-cylinder diesel engine for Europe
The driver-oriented, sporty standards of the new Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupé are also making themselves felt in the engine range. The basic engines are the market launch of high-torque six-cylinder in-line turbo diesel engines.
The two diesel-powered GLE Coupé models are powered by the OM 656, the six-cylinder in-line engine from the current engine family. It is available in two power levels, as GLE Coupé 350 d 4MATIC with 200 kW (272 hp) and 600 Nm (combined fuel consumption: 8.0-7.5 l ) / 100 km; Combined CO 2 emissions:
211-197 g / km) and as GLE Coupé 400 d 4MATIC with 243 kW (330 hp ) and 700 Nm torque (combined fuel consumption: 8.0-7.5 l / 100 km; combined CO 2 emissions: 212-198 g / km) 1 . In both versions, the powerful engine meets the Euro 6d standard (RDE / Real Driving Emissions Step 2) even in demanding driving situations.
This is achieved, among other things, by an additional SCR converter (Selective Catalytic Reduction) with an ammonia slip catalytic converter (ASC) in the exhaust tract of the GLE Coupé. This allows an even more tailored to the individual driving characteristics dosage of the reducing agent AdBlue ® as an excess of ammonia in the second SCR converter is further degraded.
Sportiness as standard: powertrain engineering
Power-on-Tap, also called torque on demand, is also the motto of power transmission. All variants of the new GLE Coupé come standard with a transfer case with electronically controlled multi-plate clutch behind the 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission. This allows a variable transmission of the drive torque from 0-100 percent (torque on demand) between the axles. In turns, it can specifically influence the yaw moment against oversteer and understeer of the vehicle and, together with the shorter wheelbase, increase the maneuverability of the new GLE Coupé.
Suspension: AIRMATIC or E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL on request
The new GLE Coupé is fitted as standard with sportier and firmer tuning. Compared to its predecessor generation, it benefits from tighter attachment points and improved geometry, providing an even more precise wheel position and better shielding against vibration caused by uneven road surfaces. The advanced air suspension system AIRMATIC is optionally available with sporty tuning. The adaptive adjustable damping uses highly complex sensor systems and algorithms to adapt the damping behavior in real time to the road conditions and the driving situation. Regardless of the load, the air suspension also keeps the vehicle at the same level and – depending on driving speed and driving situation – can automatically adjust the ground clearance at the touch of a button.
Another enhancement is the optional E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL suspension, which is combined with the AIRMATIC air suspension system. This is the only system on the market that can individually control the spring and damping forces on each wheel. This means that it not only counteracts the rolling of the body, but also the pitching and squat. Together with ROAD SURFACE SCAN and the CURVE curve-slope function, E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL enables a synthesis of roadholding and comfort and supports Mercedes-Benz's claim to build the world's most intelligent SUV suspension.
E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL operates at 48V and is available as an option. On poor road surfaces, the system can even regain energy, which roughly halves the energy requirement compared to the predecessor system of the S-Class. The hydropneumatics creates dynamic forces that superimpose the air suspension forces and actively support and dampen the vehicle body, z. during linear and lateral acceleration or when driving on uneven roads.
Driver Assistance Systems: Superior support in traffic jams and other situations.
The new GLE Coupé features the latest generation of Mercedes-Benz driver assistance systems that help drivers cooperate. This leads to a particularly high level of active safety. The new GLE Coupé comes standard with Active Braking Assist, which helps to prevent rear-end collisions and collisions with pedestrians and vehicles crossing over.
Some Intelligent Drive features that are also on the market at the highest level beyond the SUV segment can be ordered as an additional option. This includes Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC with route-based speed adaptation. When the driver turns it on, the GLE Coupé can respond to information from live traffic, ideally before the driver or the radar and camera sensors detect this traffic obstruction. If a jam is detected, the speed will be approximately 100 km / h as a precaution unless the driver expressly decides otherwise.
Actually stopping in a traffic jam on the highway the Active Stop-and-Go Assistant can then essentially perform the tasks of holding in the lane and maintaining the safety distance with high availability at speeds up to approx 60 km / h. Start-up can be automatic up to one minute after stopping. On multi-lane roads, the Active Steering Assistant can assist the driver with the emergency corridor function . On highways, at speeds below 60 km / h, the vehicle refers to recognized lane markings and applies swarm intelligence to orient itself to surrounding vehicles. If such vehicles or markings are not recognized, the GLE Coupé orients itself as before on the vehicle in front.
The dynamic and sporty coupé for many types of terrain
The new Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 Coupé uniquely combines sporty design with intoxicating performance and strong off-road capabilities. Its impressive dynamics are provided by the 429 hp 3.0-liter six-cylinder in-line engine with 48-volt technology, the fully variable AMG Performance 4MATIC + all-wheel drive, the AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9-speed automatic transmission and a 2.4-liter Wheelbase supports his SUV siblings. The driving dynamics are further enhanced by the AMG driving programs and the AIRMATIC-based AMG RIDE CONTROL suspension. The AMG-specific grille visually enhances the membership of the AMG family. In addition, the new GLE 53 Coupé offers all the benefits of a Mercedes SUV: plenty of room for occupants and luggage, extensive safety features and excellent traction on a variety of surfaces and road conditions.
"The new GLE 53 Coupé adds even more style and sophistication to our SUV family, paired with AMG's signature features such as the brand-specific grille, attractive coupe lines featuring sophisticated suspension technology and our powerful, efficient straight-six engine 48-volt technology – both guaranteed An exciting driving experience in terms of longitudinal and lateral dynamics, "says Tobias Moers,
Managing Director of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.
Exterior design – expressive, muscular and dynamic
The exterior design of the new GLE 53 Coupé embodies the promise of AMG Driving Performance. Belonging to the AMG family is immediately apparent from the AMG-specific radiator grille. The stylish and distinctive coupé silhouette gives a confident appearance with lines that convey passion and power. This is also reflected in the outstanding strengths of the hood. Elegant details such as the Mercedes star in the double ring, narrow headlights and the striking "A-wing" in the front apron emphasize the sharper design.
The front apron has AMG-specific features such as sporty outside air intakes with two side slats in silver chrome with black accents. Like the air intake flaps, the front splitter is made of silver chrome. The AMG side skirts and the tailgate spoiler are painted in body color. The featured wheel arches provide space for large wheels – 21-inch wheels with AMG lettering are standard. On request, a selection of 21 and 22 inch wheels is available.
The redesigned rear bumper features AMG details such as a striking diffuser and a silver chrome trim to accentuate the vehicle's powerful attitude. The special AMG exhaust system with round double tailpipes in high-gloss chrome underlines the sporty, dominant look. Further customization is possible with the AMG Night package. This package contains a series of glossy black elements. These include: black high gloss front splitter, front bumper trim, diffuser and outside air intakes, mirror caps, window frames and exhaust covers.
Interior design – progressive and robust elegance
The characteristic AMG appearance continues in the high-quality interior. Unique color accents such as red contrasting seams and red seat belts contribute to a sporty ambience with an exclusive touch. The AMG seats in black MB-Tex / DINAMICA microfibre provide optimum lateral support and have an AMG-specific pattern with AMG emblems in the front backrests.
The AMG performance three-spoke steering wheel of the latest generation impresses with aluminum paddles and driver-oriented ergonomics. The AMG stainless steel sports pedals with rubber studs and black floor mats with "AMG" lettering underline the sporty look.
For the further individualization of the interior, a variety of leather upholstery and a variety of high-quality interior elements are available. The available AMG carbon trim elements give the interior a particularly sporty touch.
Agile and precise: AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL roll stabilization
AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL based on AMG RIDE CONTROL + is optional on the GLE 53 Coupé and is available to boost the driving experience even further. A particular innovation that makes a significant contribution to sporty driving dynamics is the active roll stabilization system AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL. With two independently operating electromechanical drives on the front and rear axles, this system not only reduces roll response in turns, but also allows for more precise control of cornering and load change characteristics. In addition, it increases the ride comfort when driving straight ahead, for example, by balancing unilateral unevenness. Body movements can be actively adapted to the driving conditions, which improves the driving experience.
Another advantage over a conventional hydraulic system is the significantly faster response. The AMG control can adjust the driving status up to 1000 times per second. In addition, the new system has a significant weight advantage.
Air suspension with stepless damping
The AIRMATIC-based AMG RIDE CONTROL air suspension was developed in Affalterbach to offer a driving experience optimized for long-distance comfort and high agility. The sporty spring-damper setup and the adaptively adjustable damping provide a combination of outstanding driving dynamics and high driving comfort. The damping behavior can be selected in the three modes "comfort", "sport" and "sport +", whereby a clear difference between high long-distance comfort and sporty driving dynamics is achieved. In addition, there are two new levels for off-road use: "Trail" and "Sand".
Thanks to the all-round pneumatic level control, the GLE 53 Coupé maintains a constant vehicle level regardless of the load. In the AMG DYNAMIC SELECT driving programs "Sport" and "Sport +", the vehicle standard is usually lowered by 0.6 inches. In the "Comfort" driving program, the vehicle is lowered by 0.6 km / h from a speed of 120 km / h. This reduces the air resistance and thus the fuel consumption. In addition, the handling stability is improved by a lower center of gravity. To increase the ground clearance on uneven ground or on slopes, the suspension level can be increased by up to 2.2 inches at the push of a button – both at a standstill and at a driving speed of up to 70 km / h.
Optimized handling: sport steering and high-performance brakes
The electromechanical speed-sensitive power steering has a variable transmission ratio. It convinces with direct steering and precise feedback. In addition, the steering power assistance in the two levels "comfort" or "Sport" is set. The configuration is automatically activated based on the selected AMG DYNAMIC SELECT drive program. Settings can also be personalized at any time in the driving program "Individual".
The high-performance brake system brakes reliably on short braking distances. The front brakes have 15.75 inch diameter ventilated and perforated integrated brake discs and silver 2-piston fixed calipers with black AMG lettering. In the rear, the internally ventilated integral brake discs have a diameter of 13.6 inches with 1-piston floating caliper.
Six-cylinder engine with turbocharging and EQ boost
The basis for the AMG peak performance of the GLE 53 is its electrified 3.0-liter engine with turbocharging and additional electric compressor. The 6-cylinder inline engine delivers 429 hp and delivers a maximum torque of 384 lb-ft. Its EQ Boost starter generator delivers an additional 21 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque for a short time and also powers the 48-volt on-board power supply.
The EQ Boost starter generator combines the function of a starter and alternator A powerful electric motor located between the engine and the transmission. This innovation, as well as the intelligent electric auxiliary recharging compressor and turbocharger, all have the same goal: to improve AMG performance and driving dynamics while reducing fuel consumption and emissions. The GLE 53 Coupé accelerates from zero to 100 km / h in just 5.2 seconds and reaches an electronically limited top speed of 200 km / h.
Additional power thanks to an auxiliary electric compressor and a 48-volt electrical system
The electric auxiliary compressor The compressor rapidly builds up a high boost pressure until the large turbocharger starts up. As a result, the 3.0-liter engine reacts promptly and reacts dynamically without turbo lag. Another advantage is the high sophistication of the six-cylinder in-line engine.
The EQ Boost Starter Generator upgrades the GLE 53 Coupé even further. It also supplies the 48 V electrical system with electricity. The conventional 12 V electrical system is also powered by the new network. The 48 V battery increases the total capacity of the vehicle battery and allows the supply of more electrical energy. Another advantage: the same power needs only a quarter of the power of a conventional system. The result is that the wiring can be thinner and thus lighter. The existing 12V system powers components such as lights, cockpit, infotainment displays and control units.
Highly Efficient: The EQ Boost Starter Generator
The EQ Boost Starter Generator is a key component of the 48V system. It not only serves as a generator, but is also responsible for hybrid functions. This allows fuel savings that were previously reserved for high-voltage hybrid technology. The EQ Boost Starter Generator is also responsible for idle speed control for the first time.
The hybrid functions include boost, recuperation, load point adjustment, glide and a virtually unnoticed engine restart with the start-stop function.
Since the belt drive for ancillaries on the front of the engine is eliminated, the installation length of the new six-cylinder engine is also significantly reduced compared to conventional six-cylinder engines.
This creates space for exhaust aftertreatment Particularly efficient system near the engine.
The optionally selectable AMG Performance exhaust system offers a special acoustic experience. The variably adjustable exhaust flaps allow the driver to change the vehicle noise at the touch of a button. Depending on the driving program, the sound characteristics vary between discreet and very powerful.
Maximum traction: fully variable 4MATIC + all-wheel drive
The new GLE 53 Coupé is equipped with the AMG Performance 4MATIC + fully variable four-wheel drive for improved traction and driving dynamics. The intelligent steering system links the permanently driven rear axle variably with the front axle and continuously calculates the optimum torque distribution – depending on the driving situation and the wishes of the driver. The all-wheel drive thus improves the longitudinal dynamics and the traction and lateral dynamics. The result is even greater acceleration from standstill and optimized traction on bends or on slippery surfaces.
The AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G transmission
The AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9-speed automatic transmission (TCT = Torque-Converter Transmission) ensures an attractive response Shifting with extremely short shifting times. It provides AMG's typical rapid acceleration and quick gear changes – either automatically or manually via the steering wheel shift paddles.
Upshifts or downshifts are performed immediately. The gearbox is particularly responsive and dynamic in the "Sport +" driving program and in manual mode.
Intelligent control electronics: AMG DYNAMIC SELECT
The GLE 53 Coupé has seven driving programs: the levels "Slippery", "Comfort", "Sport", "Sport +" and "Individual" are supplemented by two terrain-specific settings :" Trail "und" Sand ".

AMG DYNAMICS vehicle dynamics control is integrated into the AMG DYNAMIC SELECT drive programs. In the "Basic", "Advanced" and "Pro" levels, it influences the control strategies of the ESP® (Electronic Stability Program) or the all-wheel drive, for example. The intelligent pilot control anticipates the desired vehicle behavior based on the driver's actions and the sensor data. The spectrum ranges from extremely stable to highly dynamic. Additionally there are the "Traction" and "Slide" levels in the off-road "Trail" and "Sand" drive programs when the ESP® is deactivated.
MBUX infotainment system with AMG-specific displays
The MBUX innovative control and display concept is standard equipment in the GLE 53 Coupe, and offers numerous AMG-specific functions. With the Widescreen Cockpit, the instrument cluster and touchscreen display optically combine into one unit. Numerous functions can also be activated via the intelligent voice- operated control "Hey Mercedes".
The instrument cluster has its own specific details such as the AMG start-up menu and the four selectable styles: "Classic", "Sport", "Discreet" and AMG exclusive "Supersport". When the AMG-specific DYNAMIC SELECT drive programs "Trail" and "Sand" are activated, off-road-specific settings such as slope, incline and level can be selected and displayed on the instrument cluster. Rocker switches are embedded in the center console for displaying and controlling the drive programs, transmission, suspension, ESP® and exhaust system.
AMG Performance steering wheel
The AMG Performance steering wheel in black nappa leather with red contrast stitching and red 12- o'clock marking combines high functionality, high-quality haptics and optimized ergonomics. Apart from the aluminum shift paddles, it also impresses thanks to the intuitive Touch Control buttons. The entire infotainment system can be controlled with swiping finger movements.
As an option, innovative steering wheel buttons enhance the steering wheel with a round controller featuring an integrated display beneath the right-hand steering-wheel spoke, plus two vertically positioned color display buttons beneath the left-hand steering-wheel spoke. These enable AMG drive programs to be activated and conveniently controlled on the steering wheel.
Your personal racing engineer: AMG TRACK PACE
With the optional AMG TRACK PACE, MBUX is enhanced with a virtual engineer. AMG TRACK PACE enables up to 80 vehicle-specific data, as well as times on closed-off private circuits to be recorded and analyzed in detail. Many of these values can be displayed on the Widescreen Cockpit or in the optional head-up display in real-time. After putting in some fast laps, the driver can use the data to analyze and, if necessary, improve their driving skills. In addition, acceleration and deceleration values (e.g. 0-60 mph, ¼ mile, 60-0 mph) can be measured and saved.
The driver can record any circuits and save them for later vehicle data recording. Thanks to a newly developed algorithm which determines the vehicle position as precisely as possible, AMG TRACK PACE even detects when the circuit has been left or it has been shortened. This is done using GPS data as well as the sensors available in the vehicle (acceleration, gyroscope, steering angle, wheel speeds).
The additional smartphone app enhances AMG TRACK PACE on these circuits with functionalities such as video recording of the journey, individualization options for the recorded videos and photos as well as sharing on social networks.
