2021 Toyota Camry is the first to receive Safety Sense 2.5 Plus



The Toyota Camry 2021 is becoming more technical than ever.

Toyota’s Camry has been America’s best-selling sedan for 18 years. Babies who were driven home from the hospital when this model topped the sales charts can now vote. To get the crown on sale for another turn of the calendar, Toyota has just announced a series of updates to its venerable Camry that will optimize the model range, improve the car̵

7;s design, and, perhaps most importantly, add even more technology.

If you look at the pictures shown here, it’s difficult to say what’s new at first, and to be honest, there are no major visual changes. Comfort-oriented LE and XLE models are equipped with defined lower air inlets. The former gets new 17-inch alloy wheels, the latter rolls on redesigned 18s. Inside, the XLE models feature a new herringbone seat pattern for an extra touch of luxury.

If you want to add a little spice to your Camry, sportier SE and XSE qualities are still an option. For 2021, they have a bolder design of the lower panel with honeycomb inserts. Also brand new for the upcoming model year is an XSE hybrid model that offers incredible fuel efficiency and more style.

Interestingly, one thing has been fixed for 2021. The base L grade is no longer. The Camry LE will now serve as an entry-level model. A total of 17 different variants of this car are offered, three models with a V6, five with all-pot engine and front-wheel drive, another five with the same engine and all-wheel drive and four different hybrid qualities.

The sporty Camry TRD model has also been further developed. The design introduced for 2020 looks pretty good, apart from a newly available, exclusive two-tone color combination, Ice Edge with a Midnight Black metallic roof.

When it comes to driver assistance technology, the 2021 Camry is the first model to receive the Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 Plus, which offers several new functions. The pre-collision system with pedestrian detection can now also detect cyclists during the day and pedestrians in poor lighting conditions in addition to other vehicles. This system also has a so-called intersection support, which can improve safety when driving in the city. If you turn left, it can detect oncoming traffic, trigger an acoustic or visual alarm and even brake automatically in certain situations to prevent an unpleasant head-on collision. In addition, the Toyota engineers have added a so-called emergency steering assistant, which can help the vehicle during evasive maneuvers, e.g. B. when evading a cyclist or other vehicle to stabilize in his lane.

The updated adaptive cruise control system from Toyota has been expanded to include a function that makes it easier to overtake other vehicles. If you get stuck behind slower traffic, you can activate the turn signal. If you steer into the other lane, it will automatically accelerate to the preset speed to make overtaking more seamless.

Camry will now be available with two different infotainment screen sizes.

As expected, the Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 Plus also offers a lane departure warning and a lane departure warning system. The automatic high beam and traffic sign recognition are also bundled.

A reminder function for the rear seats also comes for the Camry for 2021. As with similar systems from other automakers, it is designed to prevent you from forgetting something in the car, be it a package, a laptop bag or something more critical like a pet or sleeping child.

The driver assistance technology of this sedan is rounded off by monitoring the blind spot with cross traffic warning at the rear. This is standard on XSE and XLE models. It is now available as an option in classes LE, SE and SE Nightshade at the lower end. Two floating infotainment screens are new for the last model year. The standard touch-sensitive display measures 7 inches, while the up-level offer reaches a more generous 9 inches. Minor interior changes to the Camry include some new panels. Once again, an eight-way adjustable driver’s seat is standard across the entire range, while ventilated front seats are available on the XLE and XSE models, which can be a stroke of luck in hot summer weather.

When it comes to improvements, there isn’t much to report. The base engine of the Camry remains a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with up to 206 HP depending on the model. For drivers who want a little more juice, a smooth-running 3.5-liter V6 with 301 hp is on the program again. Both engines are tuned to an eight-speed automatic transmission, although the all-wheel drive is only offered with the base I4. AWD is a pure combination of North America and is expected to account for approximately 15% of Camry’s sales.

Of course, a Camry hybrid is again available. The drive train revolves around a 2.5-liter engine, which is complemented by a pair of motor generators. Here the total system performance reaches an output of 208 HP. The Hybrid Camry should deliver performance similar to that of the base engine, though you probably won’t get a petrol-electric vehicle for maximum driveability. This is where fuel efficiency comes in, and this Camry doesn’t disappoint. Expect an estimated 51 miles per gallon in the city in LE entry-level, 53 mpg on freeway journeys and 52 mpg combined. SE, XLE and XSE hybrid models are slightly less efficient. They are rated at 44/47/46 mpg.

The current Toyota Camry is a fine mid-range sedan. Updated looks and additional technology for 2021 should help this family-friendly four-door car maintain its sales leadership. Production is slated to begin in October, and the examples should arrive at dealers shortly thereafter. Pricing has not yet been announced, but is likely to be very similar to the 2020 model, which starts and changes at around 25 giants, including target fees.
