Louisiana is trying to prepare temporary hospitals and ventilators while the steady rise in coronavirus cases continues and has now passed the 2,000 mark.
According to the Louisiana Department of Health, official reports indicate that there are currently 2,305 coronavirus cases in the state.
Of the COVID-19 cases, 83 residents died.
Last week at this time there were just over 300 coronavirus cases in Louisiana.
The neighboring Mississippi reports 485 coronavirus cases.
The state has performed more than 2,000 coronavirus tests. Passage test centers have been opened in New Orleans and Jefferson Parish.
Louisiana health officials also report the number of COVID-19 patients in the hospital. There are currently 676 patients in the hospital, 239 of whom are ventilated.
The steady rise continues across the state of Bayou as government and local leaders adapt to worst-case scenarios in which hospitals are overwhelmed. This led to an order by Governor John Bel Edwards to stay at home that closed more insignificant businesses across the state to slow the spread of the corona virus.
Bars and clubs had previously been closed, restaurants were instructed to take away or deliver only, and schools were closed as part of previous nationwide efforts to prevent the Louisiana COVID 19 outbreak.
Fifty-three communities in Louisiana report cases of coronavirus. State and local leaders emphasize the importance of social distancing to protect vulnerable people.
New Orleans continues to lead the state with COVID-19 cases. State health officials said there are now 997 coronavirus cases in the Orleans community.
Officials said 46 people who lived in New Orleans had died from COVID-19.
Mayor LaToya Cantrell announced preliminary plans to use the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans as a location for COVID-19 patients who have been treated and need to be isolated.
“Our data shows April 7th is the benchmark for hospital capacity,” said Cantrell.
The mayor said the plan would include up to 3,000 beds in the center for infected COVID-19 patients who need to recover and be isolated.
A plan could also be in the works to provide hotel rooms to homeless people in New Orleans during the peak of the coronavirus outbreak. Martha Kegel of Unity of Greater New Orleans said her homeless group had heard about hotel owners who wanted to provide rooms. The key to getting hotels with a temporary housing plan on board is that the government pays for the room, she said.
The latest round of corona virus updates is coming as the state faces a stark reality of the number of unemployed residents. More than 70,000 Louisians applied for unemployment benefits last week, the U.S. Department of Labor said.
Department of Labor officials said 72,620 Louisiana residents had filed claims for the week ending March 21. The previous week, 2,255 residents submitted.
Federal officials reported Thursday that nearly 3.3 million Americans applied for unemployment benefits while the country was economically shut down due to the COVID-19 health crisis.
In the U.S., there are at least 74,201 cases in all 50 states, as well as in Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Washington D.C., according to CNN. According to Johns Hopkins University, more than 1,000 people have died in the United States.
The numbers rose on Wednesday – the deadliest day for US coronavirus reporting – with 223 deaths that day alone. Just four days earlier, the death toll was 326.
The Senate unanimously passed a historic $ 2 trillion stimulus package in response to the coronavirus pandemic late Wednesday.
Legislation is the largest emergency response package in US history and the most important legislative measure to deal with the rapidly escalating coronavirus crisis, which is overwhelming hospitals and shutting down much of the economy.
