. 3 confirmed measles case in El Paso, as the disease recurs after 25 years of absence

EL PASO, Texas – The number of confirmed measles cases in El Paso rose to three on Monday, which was the first recurrence of highly contagious respiratory disease for over a quarter of a century, according to local health officials.

The youngest victim was a toddler, the municipal health department said. He joined a woman in her late 40s and another toddler who had been diagnosed with a nationwide outbreak last week that eventually reached the border with measles.

"El Paso vaccination coverage is so high that we do not expect a large number of cases," said Robert Resendes, director of public health in El Paso.

Two cases were reported after the first one last week, and health officials expressed concerns that the staff at Fort Bliss might have been exposed. But Resendes said Monday's diagnosis "it's not believed that this second toddler exposes the general public to the disease." be vaccinated.

"We know that the effectiveness of the vaccine, especially after the recommended two doses, is about 97 percent," Resendes said.

The disease usually starts with fever, cough, runny nose and red eyes, according to the US Centers for Disease Control. These symptoms are followed by a rash that spreads from the head to the hands and feet.

So far, more than 1,000 measles cases have been diagnosed nationwide. Associated Press reported the worst US measles outbreak in 27 years.
