3 million gallons of untreated sewage flow into Puget Sound

Officials investigate, after failures in Seattle sewage treatment plants, an estimated 3 million gallons of untreated sewage have entered Puget Sound as part of the power cuts.

"West Point's wastewater treatment facility released an estimated 3 million gallons of untreated wastewater for approximately 27 minutes after backup pumping systems failed during power outages at the facility," the statement said.

The release of wastewater into Puget Sound has led local health authorities to issue several beach closures, "the agency said, suggesting that some of the effluent may not be completely disinfected for nearly an hour

The local authorities initially stated that nine beaches were closed due to the spill, and local time the list was updated to only two beaches in Discovery Park.
