NASA research has shown that the glacier is now flowing more slowly, thickening, and advancing toward the sea instead of retreating further inland.

The glacier still loses more ice the ocean is gaining through the accumulation of snow, but now slower.

The study's lead author, Ala Khazendar, a NASA glaciologist on the OMG project, said natural cyclic cooling of North Atlantic waters was likely to reverse the course of the glacier.

The slowdown began because a sea current that brings water to the surface of the glacier became cooler in 2016. According to NASA, water temperatures near the glacier are now lower. This has been the case since the mid-1980s.
