Composer Alan Silvestri tries to connect the big movie with music and explains that "Thano's toughest decision is not a strategic but an emotional one."
Avengers: Infinity War is a homecoming for Alan Silvestri.
The Oscar-nominated composer set the tone for Avengers leading man Captain America with the first solo film of this figure in 2011 and scored the team's first film, The Avengers Year later. After resting Avengers: Age of Ultron he returned in time to pay attention to Thanos (Josh Brolin), whom a powerful tyrant like him deserves. The directors Joe and Anthony Russo and Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige sat down very early with Silvestri in Infinity War .
"At our first meeting we started with the question:" Is it even possible? give a nod to the musical theme of each character? "Silvestri tells Heat Vision . "We were open to it, but everyone agreed it would be a distraction to even try."
But Silvestri notes that he gave a nod to the composer Ludwig Goransson Black Panther theme when the Avengers drive to Wakanda. The Infinity War score is purely orchestral, which the Russos wanted. Silvestri had never worked with a directorial duo before this film and admits that he has reservations about the process.
"At first I was very skeptical because as a director I'm very subjective," he says. "That person, man or woman, is the captain on the ship, and if someone needs a definitive answer to something, they'll ask the captain."
Silvestris fears were quickly alleviated after her first meeting. "It's really amazing how the brothers work together," he says. "They never start talking at the same time, they instinctively know what the division of labor within this entity is, known as the Russo brothers, and it was like working with a person."
Silvestri confirms that the focus of this film Avengers is on Thanos.
"Thanos not only got his own musical theme, he has his own. He clearly deserves it, just because of the amount of cinematic property he owns in the film," says Silvestri.
For the other antagonists of the film ̵
"Thanos and his crew were all treated like Thanos, and they have a musical stamp because it is their vision that they perform," says Silvestri.
The Infinity Stones are strongly represented in the film, but Silvestri decided to give them their own musical signature.
"In the first Captain America I made some deal with the Tesseract [one of the Infinity Stones] who had to deal with voices and some harp," shares Silvestri. "The music for the Infinity Stones is actually built around Thanos' reaction, and every time he got one, that moment was always meaningful and often emotional."
When Silvestri was asked if he should suffer any deaths in the film (19659003) "You do not get many Marvel casualties, not at this level," Silvestri admits. "If a character traveling for several films dies, you want the audience to feel that emotionally, if they do not, then the narrative does not work and you have failed, so I have to do justice to that moment." but then the next scene could be on the battlefield, with something humorous. So musically it was a really tight rope.
The most challenging scene to score was spiked with Thanos, Silvestri chose his words carefully when describing that special moment with his favorite character.
"That's hard to answer … the scene is about Thanos. He is a very powerful being who does bad things, but he is also a thoughtful character Joe, Anthony and the authors have a very human side. I'll say that Thanos' hardest decision is not a strategic, but an emotional one. "
Silverstri jokes that Thanos is hard at work during the two-and-a-half hours run.
" Thanos had to do some work before the end of the movie, and that leaves things in a very interesting place for them fourth Avengers "says Silvestri.
Looking back on Age of Ultron Silvestri notes that score continuity is a powerful tool for composers and Danny Elfman Silvestris Avengers theme for the sequel.A rather gloomy, emotional version of the theme was also used in the first trailer for Infinity War .
"There is some power associated with listening to thematic material associated with specific characters, especially in brands Williams has shown us this power with Star Wars "says Silvestri." If done correctly, the music will change rer character in property. "
Avenger: Infinity War opens Friday.
