5 confirmed measles cases in Oakland County where exposures could have occurred



PONTIAC, Michigan – Four more measles cases have been confirmed by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and the Oakland County Health Division. The total number of cases has increased to five in recent weeks and health officials warn that several places have been visited by people who have been diagnosed with measles.

"Measles are in the community and highly contagious. You need to be vaccinated if you are not sure if you have been vaccinated or if you have had measles in the past, "said Leigh-Anne Stafford, Oakland County Health Officer, in a press release. "If symptoms do occur, you should not visit your doctor or emergency room unless you call in advance to make arrangements to prevent exposure to other people."

The measles vaccine can be administered to several health care providers, pharmacies, and the offices of the Oakland County Health Division in Southfield and Pontiac. A special measles vaccine clinic will be open to the public on Saturday, March 23, from 10:00 to 14:00 (19459004). at South Oakland Health Center, 27725 Greenfield Rd., Southfield.

Symptoms of measles can occur up to 21 days after exposure, but the vaccine is effective only three days after administration. The symptoms of the highly contagious disease include:

  • runny nose
  • red, watery eyes (conjunctivitis)
  • Small white spots inside Cheeks, gums and palate (Koplik spots) 2-3 days after onset of symptoms
