(HOUSTON) – A man in a pickup standing next to a car leaving a parking lot in Walmart, Houston, began shooting, killing a 7-year-old girl in the car and wounding the girl's mother. Authorities said Sunday.
Three other girls were in the car, but it was not immediately clear if they were related to the woman the authorities claim was being shot in the arm.
Sheriff Ed Gonzalez of Harris County said on Twitter and Facebook it is reported that the girl who died was 7-year-old Jazmine Barnes. He said her mother, 30-year-old LaPorsha Washington, had been wounded, but survived her injury.
It was not immediately clear what had happened on Sunday morning. An arrest had not been made until Sunday evening.
The red pickup fled the scene after being shot. The car also raced off before it stopped, and the woman called 91
Sheriff Maj. Jesse Razo said the other girls in the car when the shootings took place were "shaken" and "devastated".
"We will use all available resources to bring this killer to justice," Razo told reporters. "And I urge you, whoever did that, you know who you are, please contact now, because we will look for you, we will find you, we will find you."
