Long-standing records are set to close as the polar vortex sends extremely cold air to the Midwest and Northeastern United States to end January.
Emergency conditions were issued in Wisconsin, Illinois and Michigan, due to the extreme coldness with which many schools and businesses closed until the cold air clears the region by the end of this week.

An 82-year-old man from central Illinois has died in cold weather and has increased the death toll from the extreme cold in the Midwest to seven. Authorities say he was found several hours after his case when he tried to get into his home, reports AP News.
A neighbor found the man on Tuesday afternoon and called 911. The man was declared dead later on Tuesday, said Peoria County coroner Jamie Harwood of the (Peoria) Journal Star.
The cause of death of the man was related to the effects of cold. He could not be identified immediately before being informed about the family.

Dangerous travel conditions are developing in New York and Pennsylvania, spreading through the densely populated cities of Philadelphia and New York City.

The city of Buffalo, New York, declared a state of emergency on Wednesday afternoon.

Police arrest at least two people The Detroit area has died in extremely cold weather, reports AP News.
Ecorse detective Tim Sassak informs the television station WDIV that the man was discovered on Wednesday. The man was not dressed at temperatures below zero and was wearing no hat or gloves, according to Sassak.
Sassak says police believe the man is disoriented. He was found across the street near a neighboring house. Ecorse is located about 15 miles southwest of Detroit.
A 70-year-old man was found dead in front of a neighbor in Detroit on Wednesday. No names were published.
