Hinnant says he ran outside and picked up the injured child and held it in his arms.
“I screamed, ‘someone will help me, please help me save my son,'” he said.
Hinnant told his partner to look up and see his neighbor Darius Sessoms in the yard next door with a gun in his hand, up and down and hectic.
“I looked at him when I picked up Cannon and I was so angry but I couldn’t get off my son’s side,” he said. “I just wanted to be with my son.”
Hinnant’s fiancé called 911, he said, and Sessoms drove off.
In a press release, the Wilson Police Department said officials were sent to the 5100 block of Archers Road for a shooting on Aug. 9 and found a 5-year-old with a gunshot wound who later died in a nearby hospital.
Police identified Sessoms as a suspect and arrested him after he was found in a Goldsboro residence about 30 minutes south of Wilson on Monday. It is unclear if Wilson has a lawyer.
