A driver who sits near the city picnic met the school bus and injured 36, police officers say

A racer drove a school bus with 42 people to topple on the New Jersey Turnpike and sent dozens to the hospital after an afternoon spent at a Newark-sponsored picnic at Black Bear Lake.

New Jersey State Sgt. Jeff Flynn said Sunday that a car driving north on the 79.9 East Brunswick Highway hit a guardrail before colliding with the left side of the school bus.

The car did not stop, said Flynn. The bus then hit a Mercedes shortly before 5pm before it toppled over, he said.

The bus came from the annual picnic of Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, a city-sponsored event that took place this year at Millstone's Black Bear Lake Country Club.

Baraka said that 36 passengers, including children, were brought to nearby hospitals, however were in a stable condition.

Seventeen passengers were brought to the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick and others were brought to St. Peter's University and the JFK Hospital in Edison. Of the 36 hospitalized persons, 19 were adults and 17 were under 18 years old.

Except for four patients, all patients had been discharged from the University Hospital on Sunday afternoon, a Newark spokesperson said. Three patients had been released from St. Peter's, and all were released from the JFK hospital.

The city provides a van from 10am to 6pm on Clinton Avenue # 480 for those who want to visit relatives in hospitals

"It scared us half off," Baraka said at a press conference on Saturday night. "The people had a great time there, unfortunately this thing happened."
