A Florida man who has dragged a shark to death in a viral video was sentenced to 10 days in jail

Robert Lee Benac, now 30 years old, was charged Friday with an allegation of animal cruelty on Friday, according to Hillsbourgh County jail records and his lawyer Justin Brent Petredis. One offense, said Petredis CNN on Monday.

Along with his 10-day prison sentence to serve on the weekend, Benac was given 11 months probation and a $ 2,500 fine, the newspaper said. He also has to perform 250 hours of community service, of which 125 are done in a shelter.

The video, taken on June 26, 2017, showed Benac and two other men laughing as they pulled the shark repeatedly beating into the water. One of the men said the shark looks "almost dead".

According to wildlife researchers in Florida, the shark was shot before being dragged to death.

The video caught the eye after Miami charter fisherman Mark Quartiano passed by. "Mark the Shark," posted on Instagram, saying two Instagram users sent it to him. He told CNN that he was "horrified" about the video and posted it in the hope that the men would be caught.

According to the verdict, Benac has to spend three weekends in prison. Last weekend was his first, his lawyer said on Monday.

Benac's fishing license was also revoked for three years, Petredis said.

The judge in the case withheld the decision, which means that Benac was not convicted despite the charges According to Petredis, the crime is still recorded in his file.

Michael Wenzel and Spencer Heintz, the other two men from the video, were also charged with two crimes before the charges against Heintz were dropped.

Given a similar contract as Benac Wenzel received 1
