MIDLOTHIAN, Va, (WSET) – A Virginia teenager from Midlothian made her big break on American Idol on Wednesday after impressing the judges with her rendition of "Rise Up" by Andra Day.
Shayy Winn, 17, wowed the judges and brought tears to Lionel Richie's story of perseverance.
Prior to their performance, the teenager and his story had been heavily portrayed in promotions and publicity for the show.
About a year ago, she lost her eyesight through a brain tumor – and her story was enough for the judges to give her a chance to go to Hollywood.
Before this enormous victory, however, she had to hear words that no one wanted to hear.
After she had become legally blind, she said that there was a quote that inspired her to "another side of life she never knew anything about."
Despite the new challenge, she decided to pursue her dream.
"Everything I went through last year just worked out, it means I did what I should do and it means I'm going to Hollywood," Winn said.
The backstage celebration was also touching, and she was warmly welcomed to her school two weeks later.
We also have another local candidate – SaraJane McDonald – who auditioned.
She was not in the show yet.
