A healthy diet could alleviate the symptoms of depression



A study in Australia found that changing diets took only three weeks to relieve the symptoms of depression. Young adults with depression whose diets contained large amounts of processed foods, sugars and fats, showed significantly fewer signs of depression after 21 days with more fruits, vegetables, fish and lean meats.

Heather Francis and her colleagues at Macquarie University, New York, Sydney, Australia, examined 76 poor-nutrition students aged 17-35 years with moderate to severe symptoms of depression.

The students were randomly divided into two groups: one in which the students continued their existing diet, and another who received advice on healthy eating, a lack of healthy food, and 60 AU $ (about 33 pounds) for Food.

The researchers evaluated each student for depression, anxiety, and overall mood before and after the three-week trial and evaluation of their performance through several learning and thinking tasks.

At the end of the three-week trial phase, the Healthy Eating Group showed significant improvement in mood, with depression levels falling within the normal range. The score of the students who were eating unhealthily remained in the middle to high range.

What is depression?

Depression is a condition that affects your mental health. People who suffer from depression may experience intense feelings of hopelessness, anxiety, and negativity over an extended period of time. Depression can be forms like seasonal depression and persistent depressive disorders.

Symptoms include sleep disorders, difficulty concentrating, fatigue, changes in appetite, and suicidal thoughts. Drug treatment includes antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, while cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) may be an alternative to medication.

The healthy diet group also showed significantly lower anxiety scores than the unhealthy diet group, although other measures were not significantly different between the groups.

The researchers came to 33 of the students 3 months after the test and found that only 21

percent of them adhered to the healthy diet, while those who managed to maintain their mood improved.
