Aaron Boone knows that his first season as a big league manager is in its infancy and the warts of the Yankees are aware.
Boone has the lightning fast start of the Red Sox, whose The 17: 2 record remains after the 7: 3 victory over the A on Friday the best in the majors.
"I know they win a lot every day," Boone said of the Red Sox, who won eight times, nine out of ten, and led the Blue Jays four lengths in the AL East. "They are great."
Following a 8: 5 loss on Friday against the Blue Jays at Yankee Stadium, Boone's club is 9-9 and follows their blood rivals with 7 ½ games.
And that's where Boone's Focus was:
"We're trying to get our own house in order, trying to get guys healthy and on the road to recovery," Boone said. "I'm just trying to get some traction, and the boys are playing well, that's all you can worry about at this time of the season, but it's hard not to notice they're just going through the league."
Injuries have affected Boone's roster. Third baseman Brandon Drury has played in eight games for migraine and blurred vision. Greg Bird did not play a game after ankle surgery. CC Sabathia has recently been removed from the list of disabled people, and Tommy Kahnle has been on the shelf this week with tendinitis on her right shoulder.
According to Giancarlo Stanton, April is no time to give anyone a pennant.
"We have a long season left, we play a lot [1
Stanton's home run in the third inning stopped a 50 at-bat homerless streak.
Aaron Judge started as DH for the second time this season, with Stanton in the right field for the third time.
Some suggested Stanton's slow start (putting .203 into play) could be because he was not in the right field regularly. That was his main position as Marlin.
Stanton has left eight games in and started seven as DH. He beats .273 (9-for-33) as the left fielder. As DH he beats .154 (4-for-26) and after going 1-for-4 with a homer and two RBIs on Friday night, he beats .143 (2-for-14) in three games as the right fielder Since the Yankees did not play in Detroit last Saturday or Sunday and were vacant on Wednesday, Boone said there is a chance Gary Sanchez will play on Saturday after starting behind the plate on Friday. Nevertheless, Sanchez took a groin foul tip in the eighth inning Friday night so he might not be able to go on Saturday.
