In a major triumph for the Writers Guild of America, the Abrams Artists Agency has signed the WGA Code of Conduct, which enables the agency to represent WGA members again. [1
Authors had elections and overwhelmingly re-elected David Goodman, one of the leaders of the strategy. We think it's time to get the authors and our agents back to work. The current code of conduct is a much better document than before. That's why, along with some of our negotiated changes, we've come to an agreement we can stand behind. "
Abrams joins more than 70 agencies eligible to represent WGA members for having approved a ban on packaging fees for agencies and affiliates production.
Three other medium-sized agencies – Verve, Kaplan Stahler and Buchwald – signed contracts with the WGA in the months following the redundancies on 13 April. CAA, UTA and WME sued the WGA and recently consolidated their antitrust lawsuits against the Guild in a single lawsuit. They accused the union of participating in an illegal group boycott. Pages could not reach an agreement. Bold said Wednesday that the new pact addresses confidentiality and security concerns.
"WGA has strengthened its language in terms of confidentiality and data security to ensure that our customers' contract information remains confidential," he said. "They will use enhanced security protocols and restrict access to employees within the guild who have a valid business reason to gain access to the information." and invoices to the WGA would put the agency in potential conflict if a customer had any indication that he was against this policy, a contractual obligation to the WGA to provide them with contractual information, "Bold said. "If the client decides that we should not reveal it, we will inform the guild and give the guild an opportunity to explain to the client why it is in their best interests. In return, we will never stop customers.
Abrams has approximately 65 agents and is a member of the Association of Talent Agents. The ATA held talks for several months and these talks failed twice – first on April 12 and again on June 7. Goodman announced on June 20 that the guild will only work with WME, CAA, UTA, ICM Partners, Paradigm, Gersh, APA, Rothman Brecher and Kaplan Stahler.
The WGA and ATA had no immediate comment on Wednesday.
