Apple's ongoing dispute with Qualcomm looks set to have a major impact on the components used in this year's iPhone models, says Qualcomm Chief Financial Officer George Davis. Davis said on a rally this afternoon: "Apple intends to use only our competitors' modems instead of our modems at the next iPhone release," CNET reports. Davis did not mention Intel by name, but Intel is the only other provider of Apple smartphones.
This is related to a report by KGI analyst Ming-Chi Kuo stating that Apple would reject Qualcomm because of its lawsuit with the chip maker as a long-term supplier of cellular modems. With the introduction of 4G, Apple began using both Qualcomm and Intel modems, although Qualcomm has long been proud to provide faster components. The company has announced speed tests on its Snapdragon 845 chip this week to prove its products are better than Intel's, possibly to prevent negative reactions to today's Davis & # 39; disclosure.
Apple and Qualcomm are currently involved in a fierce litigation over patents and licensing rights over Apple's use of Qualcomm technology and the amount of money that chipmaker Apple has calculated to use its components and patents. Apple initially sued Qualcomm in early 201
Qualcomm then disagreed, Apple said it owed it more money in royalties, and moreover, that the iPhone maker violated some patents and shared proprietary information with Intel. Qualcomm has also tried to sell numerous iPhone models unsuccessfully in the US.
The two have filed lawsuits since then, as formal business relationships between them have almost completely deteriorated. To make matters worse, Qualcomm expects its 5G modems to ship with devices later this year, perhaps first with mobile hotspots and then with smartphones, while Intel has publicly stated that there will be no 5G chips by 2019.
