Texas reported more than 10,000 new Covid 19 cases on Tuesday, a record-breaking daily increase as the state responds to a growing outbreak and increasing hospitalization.
The Texas Health and Human Services Commission reported 1
According to the Texas Department of Health, there were 9,268 people in the state’s hospitals on Tuesday with Covid-19, another daily record. Public health officials closely monitor hospitalizations as this can indicate how severe an outbreak is in an area. It is considered a better measure than new cases because it is less dependent on the availability of tests.
The state has also reported an increase in the percentage of overall positive tests since mid-June, averaging 13.5% as of Monday. The so-called positivity rate indicates how bad an outbreak is in a region. At the height of the New York outbreak, more than 40% of all Covid 19 tests were positive. According to the New York State Health Department, it is currently around 1%.
Greg Abbott, governor of Texas, previously said that a positive rate of over 10% would be a “warning flag” for the state.
The outbreak in Texas can now keep up with the peak in New York in early April, when Empire State reported an average of more than 10,000 new cases a day.
Texas Health Department spokesman Chris Van Deusen said the state has reported “fairly low new case numbers Sunday and Monday after the holiday,” and the new case number may reflect Tuesday’s traffic jam.
Texas is one of 36 states in which cases grew 5% or more on Monday based on an average of seven days. This emerges from a CNBC analysis of the data compiled by Johns Hopkins University. The state reported an average of 6,990 new cases based on a seven-day moving average, an increase of almost 26% from the previous week.
As cases continued to increase at the end of last week, Abbott ordered residents across the state to wear facial cover in public places in counties with 20 or more positive Covid-19 cases. However, the order provides several exceptions, e.g. B. at services or voting.
“We have the ability to keep businesses open and drive our economy forward so the Texans can continue to earn a paycheck, but each of us must do our part to protect each other – and that means wearing a face mask in public places . ” “he said in a press release.
Harris County and Dallas County, home of Houston and Dallas, have reported the highest number of Covid-19 cases across the state, according to Texas Health and Human Services.
Houston’s hospitals are well on their way to being overwhelmed in about two weeks as the cases increase, Mayor Sylvester Turner said on CBS ‘”Face The Nation” on Sunday. People with skin color, especially Hispanic residents, are disproportionately affected, he said.
“The number of people who get sick and go to hospitals has increased exponentially. The number of people in our intensive care beds has increased exponentially,” said Turner.
The state was one of the first to open its economy wide in May, but has had to prevent some of its reopening since the cases have increased. Abbott allowed the state to stay at home on April 30, and until May 1, all stores, restaurants, cinemas, and shopping malls were allowed to reopen with changes.
Since then he has had to order that the state’s bars be closed and, among other things, reduce the capacity for indoor restaurants in restaurants.
