The US university shut down its campus on Wednesday due to reports of an armed person nearby, according to social media sources. A head boy said that the suspension came from "a wealth of caution".
"Reports of armed intruders near campus," wrote the university police department on Twitter. "Close doors and stay away from windows – When outside, leave campus immediately – police respond."
At about 1 pm. On Wednesday, a man was seen in the 3300 block of New Mexico Avenue NW, University spokesman Mark Story said in a statement. The man reportedly had an "exposed handgun".
"While the first report stated that this person was not on the campus of the AU, the US University Police issued an AU alert as a precautionary measure, pointing out that the campus is being closed," Story said.
Authorities received a phone call about a person who was gun-armed around 1:00 pm, according to D.C. The report was not confirmed immediately, police said.
Northwest Washington University issued a tweet stating that a building-searching search of campus and D.C. Police were led.
