After the dismay at NASA, the Trump campaign pulls out an ad to launch SpaceX

An online advertisement that played the historic SpaceX launch with crew last weekend to advance President Donald Trump’s re-election campaign was protested today by the wife of one of the astronauts – and soon after, the campaign deleted her version of the ad.

  • The ad, entitled “Make Space Great Again,”
; was paid for by the Trump campaign with the President’s approval. It interlaced video clips from previous space missions and from the mission to send NASA astronauts Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken to the International Space Station with quotes from Trump about America’s aspirations for space.
  • One scene showed the families of the astronauts who said goodbye before the start. “I find it worrying that a video image of myself and my son is being used in political propaganda without my knowledge or consent. That’s wrong, ”said Karen Nyberg, NASA astronaut and Hurley’s wife. wrote in a tweet marked for the space agency and its administrator Jim Bridenstine.
  • NASA generally makes its images freely available to the public, but prohibits the use of the names or similarities of astronauts currently employed by the space agency in advertising or marketing materials. The Trump campaign has deleted its version of the video on YouTube, Twitter and Facebook. Still, it persisted elsewhere on the Internet because … well, because it is the Internet.
