Is the connection between SHIELD Season 5 and Avengers: Infinity War contingent or endangering the continuity of the Marvel Cinematic Universe?
In its five seasons
SHIELD agents met with the MCU film stories whenever the showrunners Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen found a pragmatic opportunity or the plot of a movie had such far-reaching effects that a SHIELD binding was mandatory.
The Avengers Success led to the conception of SHIELD agents ; The Fallout of this film was a suitable gateway for many episodic synopses during the opening season of SHIELD . The pilot of the series was directly linked to the recent theatrical release by including Iron Man 3 Extremis virus in the Centipede Serum. Then the Thor: The Dark World climax fight is addressed in another episode.
It was not until the second half of the first year that SHIELD agents started steaming up, especially when the plot ran parallel to Captain America: The Winter Soldier . The simultaneous storytelling between film and television was unprecedented and changed SHIELD forever, for the better.
Starting with his second season, SHIELD With Hydra and the Inhumans offering a lot of engaging content, you have to be busy and therefore do not have to shoot the movies. Of course, they could not completely ignore the significant events of Avengers: Age of Ultron followed by Captain America: Civil War the following year. The links fit well into some bows, but did not affect the direction of the show.
It was not necessary for SHIELD agents to detail some of the more recent earthbound films, such as Doctor Strange Spider-Man: Homecoming and Black Panther Given the relatively closed context (though the supernatural elements of Season 4 are complementary to the Doctor Strange release)
With the arrival of Thanos, the foundation of the Marvel Cinematic Universe was shattered, but how much work the waves on agents of SHIELD ? The first hint Infinity War would affect SHIELD is in the episode airing on the night the third Avengers movie hits theaters. Quake meets up with Mack's old buddy Tony for a few centiped serum (a recall back to season one) in the hope that it will help save Coulson. During the transaction, Tony talks about strange things with aliens in New York. He clearly refers to the early attack of the Black Order in Infinity War .
The developing gravitonium arc in SHIELD reveals that Hydra has worked with a confederation of foreign races to trade them for the protection of Thanos. General Talbot even uses the upcoming attack as an excuse to absorb more power and possibly join the Avengers in combat as a graviton.
The final series of Season 5 episodes is apparently aligned to Infinity War ]. The Confederation notes that the attack has already begun and that the agents are following pictures of New York's Order of the Black Order on the news. Alas, the connection with the film is not enough.
The season finale shows a showdown by Graviton against Quake in Chicago – a safe place where there are no movie plots. Graviton is defeated and the tone of the last few minutes is filled with muted hope as a potentially dying Coulson rides with May into the sunset. Nobody dies from Thanos & # 39; infinity gauntlet finger snap.
Settling in the same universe and not tackling such apocalyptic ravages is damaging inconsistent. The only justification could be that the events of the last three or four episodes take place between the fight in New York and the Battle of Wakanda. That might be the reason for deciding to wait for season 6 until the summer of 2019. The broadcast in Avengers 4 in the cinemas could give the showrunners time to react appropriately to cinematic effects.
The sixth season will either confirm the inadequacies of the Infinity War connection or affirmatively confirm the expiration of the fifth season. Apart from continuity inconsistencies that do not follow the Thanos nod, this is also detrimental to the narrative integrity of the show.
Many of the recent SHIELD villains' decisions – Hale, the Confederation, Graviton – are a reaction to the impending arrival of the Mad Titan. However, the finale sweeps these concerns under the carpet. Not that the show could be blamed for focusing on established [SHIELD characters, but the above-mentioned hopeful ending ignores motivations and contextual storylines built for multiple episodes.
The SHIELD team goes down and takes a breath after Graviton is treated. Unfortunately, Coulson's Farewell Party does not suit the Infinity War events, because even if the end occurs before Thanos retrieves all the stones, the fact that Iron Man is missing after an alien encounter should cause discomfort to the agents
If SHIELD agents in retrospect never planned to correlate with snapping fingers, it might have been better to have a Infinity War Association in total. Even with this slight misstep, Season 5 is largely successful, and Whedon and Tancharoen certainly have big plans to return in 2019.
