Airbnb is expanding its rental options today to include some of the world's most expensive and luxurious accommodations. Called Airbnb Luxe, the new level is designed for customers who spend more than $ 1,000 a night on thoughtfully designed, massive private homes with scenic views and world-class amenities.
"Airbnb Luxe builds on Airbnb's extensive luxury travel expertise acquired through the acquisition of Luxury Retreats in 2017. This new category will be launched with more than 2,000 handpicked homes around the world, each of which will be subjected to a rigorous evaluation of more than 300 criteria to meet design and function, "the company said in a blog post. According to Airbnb, the homes must have "increased design standards", including the use of "high quality materials and finishes, as well as rare and unique features". The houses must also have "kitchen appliances" and ample bathrooms to satisfy every bedroom.
Luxury apartment rental is, of course, a market that has existed for decades and it is intensifying with competition from traditional hotel companies such as Marriott and Four Seasons, both of which want part of the short-term rental market. Why spend that kind of cash on an Airbnb rental instead of just the nicest hotel you can find? Airbnb Believes It's Better:
Each Airbnb Luxe booking offers 24-hour access to a dedicated, highly-qualified travel designer who ensures that the stay is tailored to the traveler's individual needs at every step , This includes effortless booking and check-in, coordinating local tailor-made experiences and activities, and organizing a wide range of services, from child care to private chefs to in-house massage therapists – or dedicated personal training sessions in your own gym environment.
The shift towards travel agency services is part of a shift that the company embarked on in 2016 with the launch of Airbnb Trips, which contractors used to sign up to offer everything from tour guides to cooking classes at Airbnb Platform. For Luxe, however, the company still seems to take a few steps further and hire full-fledged personal assistants to design every facet of the journey, creating a luxurious feel. That should make price tags thousands to tens of thousands more palatable if you have that kind of money.
And that is a point to be emphasized. This is not for the daily consumer. According to Airbnb, bookings for rentals that cost more than $ 1,000 a night have increased 60 percent over the past year. However, we do not know if this is an increase of 60 percent over 100 or 1,000 or 10,000 bookings. It is not clear how big this market is for Airbnb, but do not make mistakes – this is for rich people.
That's not a bad thing for Airbnb of course. It has, for some reason, been buying luxury retreats, and this is a smart game for the company to benefit from an untapped market that is mainly occupied by travel agencies and service providers that are only accessible to wealthy people who know the right people. With Airbnb Luxe, anyone (or any group of people) who are prepared to pay the money can now have access to a villa in Tuscany, a mansion in Costa Rica or a chalet in the Swiss Alps.
The good news is that having enough friends or family on board to split costs may not be as expensive as it looks at first glance. You can not say the same thing about a hotel.
