CAPE TOWN – Former constitutional judge and human rights activist, Albie Sachs recalled the late Nelson Mandela's commitment to the country's constitution.

Sachs held the keynote address Wednesday evening in the Robben Island Museums Memorial Lecture at the V & A Waterfront.

Sachs began his keynote speech with an unconventional introduction by asking questions to the audience.

What was one? What is Madiba's legacy and why will not the last leg of the battle veteran's centennial speech be about the late former statesman?

Sachs is of the opinion that his and Madiba's common intent to defeat apartheid is theirs

"We would never have met, but because of our common hatred of apartheid, injustice, inhumanity, humiliation, we came together."

The former Constitutional Court Justice also talked about laws issued by Madiba and dealt with the first municipal elections that had crushed its newly appointed bench of judges and declared it unconstitutional.

Sachs is impressed by Madiba's mature response to the Constitutional Court's decision.

"And if Nelson Mandela did that, the Post Minister, the Town Clerk, and the Justice Minister can not feel personally offended if the court acts against them."

Sachs also paid homage to anti-apartheid activist Albertina Sisulu, which is also celebrated for her role in the struggle for freedom.
