Ninth inning: Red Sox 7, Astros 5

Beginning : Closer Craig Kimbrel replaced Porcello on the hill. Prompted for Martin Maldonado, Evan Gattis emerged to second base. Josh Reddick then knocked out. George Springer redoubled to get the base and Jose Altuve drove him with an RBI single to reduce the gap to two runs. Bregman could not sustain the thrust and flew out to the deep left end of the inning.

First inning: Red Sox 2, Astros 0

Below : Leo off hitter Mookie Betts took second place with a double from the midfield wall. Andrew Benintendi drove in Betts on a single crack to the right field and gave the Red Sox an early 1-0 lead. After J.D. Martinez had finished drinking, Xander Bogaerts threw a soft clipper back to the pitcher, but Cole's throw went over the head of First Baseman Yuli Gurriel. Benintendi moved up to third, Bogaerts came second.

Cole ran Steve Pearce on four pitches.

After the bases were loaded, Rafael Devers drilled a ground ball into the left field for a base goal. Benintendi scored to extend Boston's lead to 2-0. LHP David Price and RHP Gerrit Cole are the starters. Alex Speier wrote about how the Red Sox bet they can fix Price's Fastball and Cutter. "I'm excited, I want to come back, I want to help win, and I want to do it as a starter," Price said Thursday. "[But] I say the same thing over and over again, it's not about saying it at the time, it's about doing it."
