The 19-year-old, 195 pound heavy Svechnikov exchanged with Ovechkin. Svechnikov nodded, seemed to agree to a fight, and then it happened.
Ovechkin, 33 years old and weighing 235 pounds, landed three consecutive rights in Svechnikov's face. It was over quickly. Teammates from Canes immediately signaled a coach.
The Canes television program captured an even more brutal angle of struggle.

Svechnikov was obviously unwell. He was escorted to the changing room.
The fight was only Ovechkin's fourth career.
Chip Alexander reported that Svechnikov would not return to the game during the first break.
