We all have to face death. That's even true for our best friends, the cars. It is inevitable and natural. But when death points to a larger and more depressing trend, it is extremely sobering. This year we saw the death of many sedans. How much. Here are the cars that died in 2018.
I like limousines. They are smaller, more manageable and stylish than their crossover counterparts. I am sorry that many of them left, but many of these entries did not find buyers. Someone has to be a loser in capitalism.
The 2018 car deaths were also sped up by some major business overhaul decisions, which you'll read below. It is not lost to me that there are very few big crossovers and trucks on this list. Hmmm.
Cadillac's ATS sedan was a car I've always appreciated because it was a wonderful BMW 3 Series competitor and frankly I'm sick of hearing about the 3 Series. It had beautiful lines, great handling and fun, even with the floor covering. The V version was a legitimate rocket.
The problem, however, was that it was pretty tight. Even I beat my head several times on the ledge as I climbed into the backseat and climbed out of the backseat.
At least the coupe stays with us, though probably not for long.

Oh, just to be clear, the coupe is only killed in the US and in Canada. His life will continue on other markets for the time being.
Yes, yes, I know that Asimo is not a car. But he was a cool little robot boy whom Honda trotted from time to time. He only got better with age before he died at the age of 18 at the beginning of this year. It felt like he almost lost a friend here.
The death of Juke is more noticeable If you see what came next: the Nissan kicks. At least the juke was funky, pretty funny and funny-looking. What is the kicks? Another bland, compact crossover? Just take a look at it.

In April, Ford announced he was running out of everything would cars and sedans in the US with the exception of the Mustang and the Focus Active, a mini crossover. But then! Due to Donald Trump's tariffs, the automaker said in August that he would not sell the Focus Active in the US market and solidified the death of the Focus name badge here.
This leaves only the trucks, the big crossovers and the Mustang left over.
Volkswagen's original Beetle was loved by many for its affordability, simplicity, air-cooled sounds and pluckiness. The last Beetle was basically a Golf underneath, heavier, compromised and front-wheel drive. It was pretty strange.
Volkswagen will make a final push with the Final Edition for the model year 2019 and then stop production of the new beetle. There are rumors that the bug could be revived as an electric vehicle. We'll see how that turns out when it happens.
To be honest, I totally forgot that even was a hybrid CT6 . It was built in China and sold quietly here. Now it was discontinued for the model year 2019. Do you have strong feelings? Because I'm sure not.
Okay, maybe last month you heard of General Motors announcement "investing in the future" to cut 14,000 jobs and close five North American plants. In addition to all this, there are also car accidents.
GM's announcement, like Fords, came this year, but said production will end next year, so essentially dead cars are on the way:

- Buick LaCrosse
- Chevrolet Impala
- Chevrolet Cruze

Oh man. So the new BMW 3 Series will not only give up a manual option, the car version does not come here either. It's going to be one of those non-American cars that will scream and scream enthusiasts here for the next 25 years. The Chevy City Express is not as popular as the Ford Transit Connect. Launched in 2014, the Nissan NV200 is basically a newly redesigned Nissan NV200. And the sales figures are grim according to this motor-trend story:
Chevrolet sold the City Express in the US since its introduction less than 30,000 units. For comparison: The Ford Transit Connect sold last year alone 34,473 copies.
Yikes. After reading the cancellation seems pretty much to be expected. I do not think it's going to be terribly missed.
I forgot that MKT was one thing and it definitely has something to do with her awful name. Lincoln has heard the criticism and will phase out the MKT. The replacement will be the aviator, a decidedly less three-row crossover. Of course I can not say how the look of the Aviator will age, but I'm willing to bet that they are better than the MKT.
Like the MKT, the MKX will leave and be replaced by a more memorable name, in this case the Lincoln Nautilus. Will Lincoln re-conquer the luxury market with a new face and name? If it works for the Hollywood elite, it may work here.
