All in Fortnite's huge v5.0 Season 5 patch

Fortnite Epic

Fortnite Season 5 is finally here After ten weeks of superheroes and blockbuster movies, we're entering a brand new era Fortnite One that has a historical theme and brings big changes to the game.

While I'm writing this article (at 4 pm ET), the game is still offline, but Epic already has patch notes for v5.0, the gigantic patch for the start of season 5. There's a ton you'll have to go through, and you'll want to buckle up for something pretty bumpy before the game is playable, it's hard, everything to decipher, but now we know the following: I'll update it later, when the game is back online.

Shotgun Nerfs

Here's going on: Epic has the popular dual Shotgun strategy that gives it to the players Allows to quickly switch to a new generation of players, misled second slotted shotgun to avoid reloading in fast melee combat. The note itself reads: "After firing a shotgun, another shotgun can not be fired for a very short time." This seems to be a kind of clumsy solution, as I'm not sure what happens if you switch to a second shotgun type of cooling on the screen?), But we need to see how it works in practice. Epic has also adapted the shotgun spread to be consistent, not random, which should end up as a buff and should result in fewer "9 damage" memo situations. I understand the slotting change, since Epic clearly does not want you to need two whole shotgun slots, although I know that will disturb the number of players. In a sense, this is both a nerf (no double shotgun) and a buff (no shotgun contingency). We'll see how it shakes.

All-Terrain Karts

Fortnite passes PUBG ? It may not be a full-fledged car, but we now have access to Fortnite 's first real vehicle, which is a step beyond a shopping cart. It's the all-terrain kart, or ATK, which has four seats and a bounce plate for a roof. The kart may drift and actually jump, but this requires players to lean backwards in the back to clear obstacles. If everyone does this at the same time, it leads to a higher jump. Sounds … nested, but we'll see how it works in practice. Between this and another change (XP for resuscitation), Epic seems to emphasize and encourage team play in this patch.

Deserts And Rifts

If you expected Jurassic Jungle and Viking Valley to appear as new history POIs on the map, that's not exactly the case today. All Epic has to say about Rifts in these patch notes is that you "test your guts and go through a rift. You're on a wild ride." They also say there are new, unnamed POIs on the map, but until the game is live, we get nothing more than a hint that "Viking ships, desert outposts, and ancient statues have surfaced all over the island." But the patch notes promise a new Desert biome, not the entire map, but includes a part of it. There are two new ones called POIs, Paradise Palms and Lazy Links. Paradise Palms seems to be a sort of Grand Canyon-like campsite, while Lazy Links is undoubtedly a golf course. We will not know the full extent of the map changes for a while yet, but it seems like there is a lot to do and at least these two zones would be permanent, whatever happens to the historical stuff. Challenge Changes

Epic tightens up the challenges a bit. Progressive challenges are now limited to one season and can be completed throughout your Fortnite career. They can be completed with a certain amount of fixed XP, and your seasonal levels are no longer important. In addition, weekly challenges are now shared between three free and four others if you own the Battle Pass. But you have four more left to unlock the weekly reward, so you'll need the Battle Pass for that.

Assorted Others

Here you can read through the entire patch notes themselves if you want to have all the details in addition to the biggest changes, but here are some last highlights that I'd like to remember:

  • Fixed an issue where Autorun could be active while using a shopping cart. (Wait, that was an accident?)
  • The Nintendo Switch has been enhanced with gyro / motion controls. Adjust these options in the Settings menu. (I hate gyros, but I know some people love them)
  • The center of Storms 7, 8 and 9 can now move in random directions (instead of just shrinking). As the storm approaches, it will move to the new location and shrink. (Not quite sure what that means, but depending on how this behavior works, this could be significant.)
  • The Battle Pass Challenge hit sound volume has been lowered. (thank goodness)

Well, that's my pretty quick pass, but that's massive changes to both the map and the metagame, which will take a while to analyze. I can not wait to play and see how that works. See you out there.
