Alonso took over in the final stages of the race the lead of his former Formula 1 racing driver Felipe Nasr, who was curtailed early due to heavy rain. Alonso shared his victory with Kamui Kobayashi, Renger van der Zande and Jordan Taylor.
"It's amazing," said Alonso NBCSN . "Just an amazing experience with this team, from the test and now the race – a perfect run of the race.
" Very different conditions and we were competitive in everything – dry, wet, day and night. Really happy for the team and all the guys.
"[This win] will take a very high rank. Winning this type of endurance race at famous places like Daytona means a lot. With zero experience and experience in endurance before [last year]it's a pretty big deal. I was in the right place at the right moments, so I am happy. Team Principal Taylor quipped: "I'm disappointed that [son] Jordan has won as many as 24s. I never wanted this day to happen!"
" I can not even put it in words. Everything, everything has to come together to have these guys ̵
Regarding the extreme weather conditions that ended the race, Taylor added: "When I heard him on the radio and talking in fear, I suddenly realized, let's not run anymore! "
