CONTRA COSTA COUNTY (KRON) – Contra Costa County had 10 flu-related deaths during the flu season last year, but the year before, there were only four flu-related deaths in the county.
A new CDC report shows influenza deaths in the United States. The flu season 2017-2018 in the US was deadly. This is the result of a new report from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
The same report shows that fewer people received flu vaccines in the last year.
"There is absolutely a direct connection," said Contra Costa County. Chris Farnitano said:
Dr. Farnitano says the number of flu deaths last year is alarming.
"Eighty thousand flu deaths in this country," Dr. Farnitano. "That's more than car accidents, more than the deaths of soldiers in Vietnam."
Fifty-six thousand flu-related deaths were the previous high number, 30 years ago.
Dr. Farnitano says last year's H3N2 flu virus is a problem even for vaccinated people.
"It was not a perfect match for the vaccine that went around last year because there were reports that the vaccine was not as effective as it was still better than not getting the vaccine at all," Dr. Farnitano.
We have just been two months into the flu vaccination season this year.
So, is the trend continuing not to be vaccinated? [1
