Is this the beginning of the end for loading screens?
Sony has patented a new technology that allows game loading screens to be removed.
The patent entitled "System and Method for Dynamically Loading Game Software for Smooth Gaming" describes a technology that preloads data to prevent the loading of screens.
The patent states that the system can monitor the character of the player and use this information to load new areas in preparation as the player approaches them.
"A load boundary associated with a game environment has been identified. A position of a character in the game environment is then monitored. Instructions that correspond to a different game environment are loaded into a memory when the character exceeds the loading limit, so that the game is not interrupted, "the patent describes. From the currently loaded environment, the next environment can be loaded into a standby memory module and immediately when you reach the limit, instead of sending you to a loading screen or a "transitional space" like that of Mass Effect Lifts.
This patent is not a surprising submission, considering that one of the PS5 specifications is a custom solid state drive that Sony has focused on when discussing next generation games. It has also been revealed that the Xbox Scarlett uses an SSD, indicating that a major next generation feature dramatically reduces load times or, in the case of this patent, no loading screens during the game.
This is Important It should be noted that the patent does not provide a complete elimination of the loading screens as a whole. The description refers to loading screens that interrupt gameplay, not the initial load times at boot time. In fact, it seems unlikely that we can immediately get into a no-load game with the latest technology, but anything that makes loading in-game easier is very much appreciated.
