LeBron James' plan to give Anthony Davis his unified number is being moved to next season, according to Yahoo Sports.
James wanted to give his new team-mate Los Angeles Lakers the # 23 Davis wore for his entire career in New Orleans – for the 2019-20 season.
When the Lakers inquired about the league change, they were informed that the deadline for March 15 had expired. However, according to sources, the league would have allowed it if the team could work with Nike, the jersey manufacturer.
Due to production issues and the massive financial burden Nike would have experienced through the already-produced James inventory # 23, Nike failed to comply with the request
Considering fans who have already bought James's jersey and to avoid distractions for a championship fighting team, the Lakers star will bypass the number change for that season.
Davis can strike free agency next summer because he owns a player option for the 2020-21 season.
James should return to number 6, which he wore when he was a member of the Miami Heat.
Davis is scheduled to hold his Lakers Launch News Conference on Saturday.
