AP FACT CHECK: Trump's US (and European) spacecraft

WASHINGTON (AP) – One of the main products of President Donald Trump's exhibition Made in America this year, NASA's The Orion Crew Capsule will fly through space thanks to Europe.

With its four solar wings, the European service module delivers drive, power, and life for the capsule's space travel, and is a departure for Trump from NASA. Do not mention Monday's event celebrating American manufacturing.

"For the first time," says the agency, "NASA will use a system built in Europe as a critical element to power an American spaceship." Airbus, Boeing's main competitor in commercial air traffic, is leading a number of European companies that have manufactured the service module.

The original Orion team capsule, manufactured by Lockheed as prime contractor with more than 1

,000 US companies, sat on the southern lawn of the White House as one of the most distinctive exhibits of products made in the US The multinational nature of the space industry and exploration – and the spacecraft itself – was left unconsidered.

"On the South Lawn, you have the space capsule," said Trump. "And every part is made right here in America."

His only reference to Europe was in the context of the trade war he persecuted. "The European Union has treated the United States very harshly," he said, adding, "we need to do something to curb the imports of European cars if the negotiations do not work."

The globalization of the industry has managed to isolate products made entirely in the US Vehicles usually have some or many foreign parts, and in a long integrated auto industry, Canadian-built vehicles can be counted as domestic by the US

In his Made in America event last year, Trump put on a Boeing jet that was foreign-made 30 percent.

For purposes of showcase, the White House cites a standard of the Federal Trade Commission, that of a product manufactured in the US as non or defined negligible foreign content and through final assembly or processing in the country. In addition, the White House says it only selects products from companies that are owned and operated by the United States.

Under these criteria, it appears that the Orion Crew Capsule that was on display hits the Made-in-US. Default. But the spacecraft that was issued as a model on Monday would not do it.

NASA counts the European module as one of three major elements of the spacecraft. The team module and the launch abort system are the others.

"The Orion service module is the spacecraft's powerhouse, providing it with electricity, propulsion, thermal control, air and water in space," says NASA. "After the Orion space launch system rocket has given it the boost it needs to go into space, the service module will propel the unmanned spacecraft 40,000 miles (64,000 kilometers) on its mission behind the moon and help it to move forward Lose weight before the crew module re-enters the Earth's atmosphere. "

The Trump administration is planning a pilot-less test launch in 2020 and Orion's first manned mission three years later. Orion will replace the space shuttle in time and lead people into deeper spaces.
