Dark Sky has over a million installations, according to the Play Store list. Many people like me, who rely on it and expect timely push warnings just before it starts to rain or snow, have to find a replacement for the weather app this summer.
To put it bluntly, you can now continue to use Dark Sky on your Android phone. It will continue to work for a few months. According to Dark Sky, you’ll get a refund if you signed up for the app’s subscription service on July 1st.
Below are three apps you can use to replace Dark Sky. There will surely be other releases that lead to the sunset of the app. Some of the following suggestions even use Apple’s data from Dark Sky, which will continue to work until the end of 2021. While the Dark Sky app itself is shutting down, you can still use the same information in a different form.
I will continue browsing the countless weather apps listed on the Play Store and add more apps to this list as we get closer to the July 1st deadline.
Appy Weather is supported by Dark Sky’s API, but presents it in a completely different and cleaner format. It is similar to your Twitter feed, but instead of random memes, it includes regular weather updates and sunrise / sunset times in expandable maps that contain more information in the main Timeline view. You can also view the forecast in hourly or daily steps.
I like the minimal feeling of appy, and scrolling through the forecast has a natural feel. Appy can use its basic features for free or $ 3.99 a year to unlock all features including widgets, notifications, radar and ads.
The weather underground
Weather Underground takes a hyperlocal approach to weather forecasting and uses data from personal weather stations. With access to over 250,000 stations, Weather Underground can make its own forecasts and provide weather information that you may find more accurate for your location, rather than other apps that apply an overall forecast to a city. In fact, I have my own weather station, which is fed into the Weather Underground dataset.
You can use Weather Underground for free or pay $ 19.99 a year / $ 3.99 a month to unlock premium features like smart forecasting, advanced hourly forecasting, and removing ads.
Fu *** weather (funny weather)
If you’re looking for a weather app with a bit of personality, Fu *** Weather is for you. Rather than just showing numbers and percentages, Fu *** Weather uses an entertaining mix of weather jargon and curse words to motivate you to go outside or to warn you of terrible weather in your forecast. Fu *** Weather uses a combination of Dark Sky and Aeris Weather for its data.
The app can be downloaded and used free of charge. In-app purchases remove ads and unlock other features like refreshing the forecast more often.
