Apple iOS 11.3 Update: New features, how to download, full release notes

  • Apple released iOS 11.3, an updated version of its smartphone operating system, on Thursday
  • The update includes four new Animoji, immersive augmented reality features, and a beta version of the iPhone Battery Health tool.

On Thursday, Apple released iOS 11.3, the latest update to its mobile operating system. The updated software was standard on Apple's new 9.7-inch iPad, which was announced this week and is now available for download on iPhones and iPads.

The iOS 11.3 update includes new features such as enhanced augmented reality features, new Animoji (if you have an iPhone X), and a beta version of iPhone Battery Health that lets you know about your iPhone's battery capacity and performance get.

Apple added the battery health feature after it was reported that iPhones with older batteries were deliberately slowed down without the practice being communicated to customers.

Augmented Reality [19659012] With ARKit 1.5, developers can place horizontal objects as well as digital objects on vertical surfaces such as walls and doors.

  • Adds support for detecting and incorporating images such as movie posters or graphics in AR experiences.
  • Supports a more realistic camera view when using AR experiences.
  • iPhone Battery Health (Beta)

    • Displays information about the maximum battery capacity and maximum performance of the iPhone.
    • Indicates whether the performance management feature that dynamically manages the maximum performance to prevent unexpected shutdown is enabled and includes the option to disable.
    • It is best to replace a battery.

    iPad Charge Management

    • Maintains battery health when the iPad is plugged in for extended periods of time. When used in kiosks, POS systems or in loader wagons.

    Animoji

    • Introduces four new Animoji on the iPhone X: Lion, Bear, Dragon and Skull.

    Privacy

    • When an Apple feature prompts you to use your personal information, it now displays an icon with a link to detailed information that explains how your information is used and protected.

    Business Chat (Beta) – US Only

    • Communicate with companies to easily ask questions, make appointments, and make purchases in the integrated news app on the iPhone and iPad.

    Health Records (Beta) – US Only

    • Access Health Records on a consolidated timeline in the Health App and see lab results, vaccinations, and more.

    Apple Music

    • Provides a new music video experience, including an updated music video section with exclusive video playlists.
    • Find friends who have similar tastes by using updated suggestions in Apple Music that reveal genres that people enjoy and mutual friends who follow them.

    News

    • Top stories now always appear first in "For You."
    • Watch the top videos curated by news editors.

    App Store

    • Adds the ability to sort customer reviews on product pages by the most helpful, cheapest, most critical, or newest.
    • Improves the Tabs tab with the app version and file size.

    Safari

    • Helps protect privacy by automatically populating usernames and passwords only after they have been selected in a web form field.
    • Contains alerts in the Smart Search field when interacting with password or credit card forms on non-encrypted Web pages.
    • AutoFill for usernames and passwords is now available in web views in apps.
    • Articles shared with Mail by Safari are now formatted in Reader mode by default, if available.
    • Folders in Favorites now display icons for their bookmarks.

    Keyboards

    • Adds two new Shuangpin keyboard layouts.
    • Adds support for connected hardware keyboards that use the Turkish F-keyboard layout.
    • Improves Chinese and Japanese keyboards for better accessibility on 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch devices.
    • Allows you to switch back to the keyboard after dictation with just a tap.
    • Fixes a problem where auto-correction could make some words wrong.
    • Fixes a problem on the iPad Pro that prevented the iPad Smart Keyboard from working after connecting to a Captive WiFi Access Point.
    • Fixes an issue where the Thai keyboard could incorrectly switch to numeric layout in landscape mode.

    Accessibility

    • The App Store provides support for the accessibility of bold and large text for display customization.
    • Smart Invert supports images on the Internet and in e-mail messages.
    • Improved RTT experience and additional RTT support for T-Mobile.
    • Improves app switching for VoiceOver and Switch Control users.
    • Fixes an issue where VoiceOver misclassified Bluetooth status and Badgesymbols.
    • Fixes an issue where the end call button may not appear in the phone app when using VoiceOver.
    • Fixes an issue where app app rating was not available with VoiceOver.
    • Fixes an issue with the use of live lists that may distort audio playback.

    Further Improvements and Corrections

    • Introduction of support for the AML standard, which provides more emergency location data for emergency recipients when SOS is triggered (in supported countries).
    • Adds software authentication support to help developers build and enable compatible HomeKit accessories.
    • Podcasts now play episodes with a single tap and you can tap details to learn more about each episode.
    • Improves search performance for users with long notes in contacts.
    • Improves the performance of Handoff and Universal Clipboard when both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network.
    • Fixes a problem that could prevent incoming calls from activating the display.
    • Fixes a problem that could delay or prevent the playback of Visual Voicemail.
    • Fixes an issue that prevented opening a Web link in messages.
    • Fixes a problem that can prevent users from returning to Mail after previewing a message attachment.
    • Fixes an issue that could cause mail notifications to reappear after being deleted on the lock screen.
    • Fixes an issue where time and notifications could disappear from the lock screen.
    • Fixes a problem that caused parents to not use the Face ID to approve ask-to-buy requests.
    • Fixes a problem in weather where the current weather conditions may not have been updated.
    • Fixes a problem where contacts may not be synced to the phone book of a car when connected via Bluetooth.
    • Fixes an issue that could prevent audio apps from playing in cars when the app was in the background.
