Apple says that a limited number of these devices have a component that can fail and expand the built-in battery. According to the company, this is not a security issue, and Apple will replace all approved batteries.
Customers wishing to see if their machines are eligible for a new battery should use the Serial Number Examiner on the "MacBook Pro Battery Replacement" page. You can find your serial number by clicking on the Apple logo in the menu bar and selecting "About This Mac". The serial number is located at the bottom of the information window.
Affected customers eligible for a new battery must visit an Apple Authorized Service Provider, make an appointment at an Apple Store, or send their device to an Apple Repair Center after repair with Apple Support.
Apple proposes to customers who receive a battery change to secure their machines. Apple also says that if the MacBook Pro in question suffers damage that interferes with battery replacement, it must be addressed before replacing the battery.
Any customer who has already paid for a replacement battery can contact Apple Support for a refund.
The battery replacement program covers affected MacBook Pro models five years after the device's first sale.
