Apple's iPad Pro had a new, Apple-designed chip called the A12X, which could match the performance of many high-end laptop CPUs ,  Apple has hired an experienced CPU designer to join his team. Mike Filippo has joined Apple as Architect last month, according to his LinkedIn profile. The move ends a decade at ARM, where he served as senior architect for various chip products. Filippo also worked on CPUs at Intel and Advanced Micro Devices.
The rent is a big win for Apple. ARM is responsible for the technology that drives the A-Series chips used by Apple in its mobile devices. For example, the A1
2X in the iPad Pro jumpboards from the big.LITTLE architecture of ARM.
"Mike has long been a valuable member of the ARM community," said one ARM representative to Bloomberg. "We thank him for all his efforts and wish him well in his next efforts." Apple has not commented on the setting.
The industry has been interested in making CPUs for Macs for years. Filippo's resume shows work on CPUs for desktop and mobile products, which means he offers flexibility to Apple. However, since the company has made no official statements about an internal CPU for Macs, we can only speculate about its exact role.
According to a April 2018 Bloomberg report, a plan for Macs with Apple-designed CPUs was allegedly greened by corporate management and could be behind product shipping as early as 2020. This year's WWDC conference of the company came and went without mentioning this, however, according to rumors. Regardless of the date, adding Filippo's experience could be helpful in making progress on this plan, which may or may not be happening.
It's also important to remember that the company may be transferring Filippo's capabilities to other locations, even though it may seem like a matter of course that Apple builds CPUs for Mac. Gerard Williams III, a key architect for Apple's A-Series mobile CPUs, left the company earlier this year. Therefore, Apple may want to close part of this gap with Filippo. In addition, Apple was a driving force in terms of augmented reality and should be interested in new hardware that would focus on AR and VR. This is an area where creating your own processor would be very useful.
