Apple's iPhone XS Max smashes Google's Pixel 3 in the benchmark test

AppleInsider takes Apple's iPhone XS Max and Google's brand-new Pixel 3 through an endurance test to see which of the two flagship smartphones is gaining the upper hand. In this first episode of our special video series, we compare the iPhone's A12 Bionic processor with Pixel 3's Snapdragon chip.

iPhone XS Max and Pixel 3

Google has its latest Pixel smartphone with Qualcomm's Octa-Core Snapdragon 845 equipped, the same chip as in the Samsung Galaxy Note 9. Both the performance and the efficiency cores clocked at 2.5 GHz or 1.5 GHz slower than the Galaxy. The processor is supported by 4 GB of RAM, while an Adreno 630 GPU controls graphics for the 5.5-inch handset.

Apple's top-of-the-line iPhone for 2018 will be powered by the new A12 Bionic chip, a six-core system-on-chip with two high-performance cores and four 2.9 GHz clock-speed cores. An integrated, four-core GPU developed by Apple cracks graphics data.

Starting with the Geekbench 4-CPU test, the iPhone XS Max doubles the Pixel 3 in single-core mode with 4,816 points compared to only 2,393 points. The gap is not that wide in multi-core, but the XS Max still beats well with a pixel of 11,584 compared to 8,312.

Apple hardware again surpassed in the Geekbench graphics test with 22,278 points to 13,845 points from Google.

Next comes Antutu's graphics-intensive benchmark. The Pixel 3 scored quite well with 284,546 points, but could not score with the iPhone XS Max with 363.687 points. Looking at the detailed results, the iPhone beats Pixel 3 in every test except memory.

iPhone XS Max vs Pixel 3 Antutu

The Antutu HTML 5 test saw the XS Max achieve around 35 percent more pixels than the pixel 3, with corresponding results of 46,531 and 34,674.

In Octane 2.0, another browser benchmark, the difference was huge. The XS Max reached a score of 43,220, almost three times 16,396. This test is a good example of Apple's hardware and software optimization.

iPhone XS Max vs. Pixel 3 Octane

For our last test, we did the 1080p Manhattan Offscreen test of GFXBench OpenGL. Again, we saw a significantly higher score for the XS Max, which achieved 120 frames per second, compared to 83 frames per second for Pixel 3.

Based on these results, there is no doubt That the XS Max is the superior device in terms of performance. The Google Pixel 3 has a not-so-exhilarating performance that surpasses even the Galaxy Note 9 in some cases.
