Arm announces new Ethos N57 and N37 NPUs, Mali G57 Valhall GPU and Mali D37 DPU



Today, Arm announces four new products in its NPU, GPU and DPU portfolio. The company is marketing the ethos line-up of its internal machine learning processor under the IP brand name, which focuses more on the existing N77 part and also unveils the smaller N57 and N37 siblings. To top it off, the company is also preparing its first GPU-IP midrange based on the all-new Valhall architecture, the new Mali-G57. Finally, we see the release of a new middle class DPU in the form of the Mali-D37.

Introduction to the Ethos NPU Family

Arm's NPU IP bid was first announced early last year, a few months later, and was publicized until it became known as the "Trillium Project". Arm at TechCon this year has officially branded the IP as an Ethos product line, and the N77 was the main product, previously referred to as the Trillium code name.

Microarchitecturally, the new N77 N77 now publicly changes its designation specifications to what was revealed last year by enabling a configurable 1

to 4 MB SRAM implementation, while last year it was revealed to be only 1 MB would be scaled. Arm explains that customers need more memory bandwidth to process these networked NPUs because the DRAM bandwidth in the premium segment does not increase as fast as the number of cores. The flagship IP offers up to 4 TOPS computing power at 1 GHz clock and a respectable efficiency of 5 TOPS / W.

Arm can use the same building blocks for the different IPs. The NPUs all share the same MAC Computation Engine (MCE) and programmable Layer Engines (PLE). The MCE consists of 128 MAC units, as announced last year, and is paired with a PLE. An MCE and a PLE and an SRAM form a Computation Engine (CE), and this is the scaling block that differs between N77, N57, and N37, and is in 16x, 8x, and 4x configurations in terms of CE count.

The middle and lower variants are released much faster than other new IP technologies, as Arm has a much greater interest in performing ML in equipment at a reduced cost mm² Silicon is important. In particular, features such as unlocking the smartphone or upscaling the DTV resolution become standard features.

The new NPUs have been licensed and delivered to customers This year, Arm announced the new Valhall architecture in the new Mali-G77, which we expect to see in SoCs next year. The new GPU architecture is a major departure from the bifrost-based GPUs we've seen in the past three years when Arm has completely redesigned its graphics ISA and computational microarchitecture.

Arm today announced that the company is applying the new mid-range Valhall architecture, starting with the new Mali-G57. We do not currently have too much detail on what the finer microarchitectural configurations of the new GPU look like, but we're probably looking at something very similar to the G77, much like the G52 downsized in comparison to the G72.

Improvements over a G52 with three execution engines per core (3EE) promise 1.3x better performance in a similar core configuration, 30% better energy efficiency, and 30% better silicon density (for better performance).

Mali-D37 DPU – High-end Features for the Mid-range

Finally, Arm launches a new mid-range DPU in the form of the Mali-D37. D37.

The new IP is based on the "Komeda" architecture, first introduced in the Mali-D71, and the successor to the Mali-D77 announced this year. Then the new DPU aims at resolutions of 2K and FHD and promises to record only <1mm² at 16nm.
