Barbara Bush's then spokeswoman, Anna Perez, told The Post and the Times that the president called, "Bail out! Bail out!" when he saw Barbara Bush walking down the hill. "She does not know why she did not get out, she just held on and next she knew there was a tree," Perez told the newspapers.
Schwarzenegger wrote in his memoirs about the incident: "Total Recall: My incredibly true life story".
"The President and I came down the hill too fast and bumped into Barbara, and she landed in hospital with a broken leg," he said on page 397. "I still have the photo that President Bush sent me afterward has. "
Later that Sunday, Fredricka Whitfield, CNN Newsroom anchor, asked Bush's son, Neil Bush, to clarify Schwarzenegger's comments and share his own memories of the events.
"About the whole idea of the crash and your mother breaks a leg, does he say he caused your mother's leg to be broken, or did she break her leg in any other way?" Asked Whitfield. "Because there are different stories out there, what do you remember – what do you remember?"
"Well, she broke her leg and ran in – I was not there, but she broke the leg that ran into a tree," he said.
CNN turned to Schwarzenegger for clarification, but he was in Europe and did not respond on Sunday night.
The actor and seven-time Mr. Olympia winner lovingly recalled his experiences with the former president at Camp David and elsewhere in his Sunday morning interview.
"We really had a great time there at Camp David," he said Tapper. "And as I said, it was a great learning experience, you know, he's hanging around, he was kind of a mentor and a kind of father figure at the same time."
