Southern Miss will not hire Art Briles for his coaching staff after meeting with the former Baylor coach over his offensive coordinator vacancy, though Briles has received the support of Golden Eagles head coach Jay Hopson.
"We have Art Briles on a position in the Southern Miss Football program," the school said in a statement Wednesday morning. "After this meeting, we informed him that he is not a candidate and the university will not comment on this topic."
Hopson, who had interviewed Briles for this job, made a statement in which he disagreed with University President Rodney Bennett regarding Brille's "candidacy."
"I interviewed Art Briles for an assistant post @ Southern Miss. I believe he is a man who deserves a second chance, "Hopson wrote in his statement." He is a man who was sincere and humble in his interview and personally committed no crime. He may not have acted in the right protocol, but that should be my job at Southern Miss! He had a job interview for an assistant position, though I think he will be a head coach on a major program in the near future.
Hopson later wrote about Briles: "He was suspended from college football for three years and was punished.

"Me appreciate the trust and support of Coach Hopson, "Briles said," I was informed today by the interim AD that the NCAA's ongoing investigations with Baylor and myself were the main reason [on not being hired at Southern Miss]. "
Briles sees faced with breaches of Level I NCAA from his time in Baylor and will appear before the NCAA's abuses this spring, having interviewed Southern Miss on Monday, reports Sun Herald [Biloxi].
Briles, whose Record-breaking Baylor helped form a co-big-12 championship in 2014 and scored 51 wins in his last five seasons with the Bears, becoming head coach of the Guelfi Fire in August set up in the Italian Federation of American Football. Guelfi Firenze is expected to go into season next month.
Southern Miss was widely criticized for having considered Briles as an insulting coordinator.
On Tuesday, the University Women's Services and Resources Committee sent a letter to University President Steven Moser and Interim Sports Director Jeff Mitchell.
"Based on Mr. Briles' membership in Baylor's football team at a time when some members were involved in a series of sexual assault and promotion of a rape culture while holding a position of authority, we are persistent against the hiring of Mr. Briles by the University of Southern Mississippi, "reads the letter.
