And if NASA is right, OSIRIS-Rex is ready to answer the biggest question of humanity: "Where are we from?" Remarkable images from the US Space Agency show the asteroid measuring a massive 262 meters. With the spacecraft OSIRIS-Rex, scientists have tracked the object around the solar system and plan to land on its surface to collect vital samples that are to be returned to Earth by 2021.
Scientists believe the spacecraft may contain signs of water and organic compounds – referred to by NASA as "hydrated minerals" – and could explain how life on Earth developed.
Some scientists have long suspected that life has reached Earth via an asteroid. What is not known is whether this life has been completely created or whether the asteroid contained only the building blocks of life. And that's exactly what makes the NASA team excited.
Bennu has been an avid expert for decades, and many believe his attributes are critical in proving that organic compounds exist outside the solar system.
Beenu is considered a Type B asteroid and has similar properties to clay-like properties that are similar to those of Earth millions of years ago.
Scientists also believe that the asteroid could have been part of a much larger object.
It is believed that the space rock collided with another asteroid in between 700 million and two billion years ago.
Bashar Rizk, instrument researcher at OSIRIS-Rex, emphasized the importance of the mission to humanity.
Mr. Rizk said, "The story of this asteroid is the history of the solar system.
"If we understand Bennu, we will understand something basic about our solar system. "
The mission targeted a sample site with a radius of 25 meters.
Such places do not exist on Bennu, however, and NASA has since then set out to investigate sample areas of 5 to 10 meters.
Four possible locations on Bennu are Nightingale, Kingfisher, Osprey and Sandpiper – all birds from Egypt.
Rich Burns, OSIRIS-REx Project Manager at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, said, "Although OSIRIS-REx was designed to collect a sample from an asteroid with a beach-like area. The extraordinary flight performance so far demonstrates that we will be able to meet the challenge of Bennu's rough surface.
"This extraordinary performance not only includes the spacecraft and the instruments, but also the team that continues to challenge Bennu. "
Nightingale, the northernmost location, offers several potential sampling areas located at this location, located in a small crater surrounded by a 459-foot diameter crater.
Kingfisher is located in a small crater 26 feet in diameter near Bennu's equator at 11 degrees north latitude. It is also known to have the strongest spectral signature for hydrated minerals.

Finally, Sandpiper is located in a relatively shallow area on the wall of a large crater with a diameter of 207 feet.
Hydrated minerals were also present.
Bennu was present Discovered on September 11, 1999, after a near-Earth asteroid investigation of the Lincoln Near-Earth Asteroid Research.
Experts have calculated that between 2175 and 2199 Bennu has a 2,700 chance to hit Earth.
