Asteroid News: NASA E-Mail Announces Near-Hit Surprise – It Slipped | | Science | news

The asteroid, named 2019 OK, raked our planet on July 25, but the stone was not discovered until it approached Earth. NASA later confirmed that the asteroid flew over the planet from a dangerous distance of only 65,000 kilometers – a fifth of the distance to the moon. A similar surprise in 2013 caused more than 1,000 people in Russia to suffer shards of blown-out windows into a rogue space rock. Internal NASA emails from Buzzfeed reveal that the US space agency was completely unprepared until 2019.

A NASA associate admitted that "this one creeped us" as it flew past Earth at a speed of 23 km / s or 52,568 mph.

Planetary Defense Officer Lindley Johnson briefed NASA on 24. July, 24 hours before the arrival of the asteroid, about the approaching approach.

In his internal memo, he wrote: "Because there may be media coverage tomorrow, I warn NASA. You know that a 57-1

30 meter asteroid will pass Earth in just 0.19 lunar distances in about 30 minutes (~ 48,000 Miles) .2019 OK was discovered about 24 hours ago. "

Paul Chodas of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory later wrote in an e-mail that the asteroid had slipped through the net.

With a diameter of between 57 m and 130 m, the asteroid was discovered by the Southern Observatory for Near-Earth Asteroid Research in Brazil.

Mr. Chodas said, "This object has slipped through a number of our nets.

"I wonder how many times this situation happened without the asteroid ever being discovered." Power to wipe out an entire city.

In a News Release dated August 6, the US Space Agency OK 2019 was the largest asteroid that passed so close to Earth in a century.

The asteroid was compared in size to a soccer field.

According to the NASA Center for Near-Earth Object Studies, the asteroid was missed due to various unfortunate factors.

First, the stone came out of orbit, which can not be fully observed by the earth telescopes.

Second, the movement of the asteroid against the background of glowing stars was not visible enough to detect its approach.

Mr. Chodas said, "An asteroid of this size that comes so close to Earth is a pretty rare event Earth's order of about two hundred years.

"And an impact of an asteroid of this size is still rare, averaging only on the order of a few thousand years."

Fortunately, NASA confirmed that the July flyby was the closest to the asteroid for another 200 years to Earth.

However, the approach has highlighted the need for better ground-based and space-based detection systems.

A space expert recently told NASA's efforts at Express.co.uk to do so Protecting the Earth is "interesting," but not enough.

Quick facts about asteroids, comets and meteors:

1. Some of the larger space rocks in the asteroid belt can have a diameter of up to 903 km.

. 2 NASA estimates that a football-field-sized asteroid collides with our planet about every 2,000 years.

. 3 An auto-sized asteroid hits the earth at least once a year on average.

. 4 A meteor that survives the fiery descent through the Earth's atmosphere is called a meteorite.

5 While icy comets fly around the solar system, their outer layers sublimate in the heat of the sun, leaving a glowing trail.
