For the first time in history, a space tennis match was played in which four astronauts took part aboard the International Space Station (ISS). [1

The tennis match was hosted by NASA and the US Open Tennis is organizing as part of the kickoff for the US Open tournament being played in New York this week. The US Open Tennis Organization also showed the game live on the Unisphere, the ball-like sculpture in front of the USTA Billie Jean King tennis center in New York.

Astronaut receives tips from Pro tennis player

Taking the game seriously, Feustel, a geophysicist, got some tips from professional tennis player Juan Martín del Potro. On his Twitter account, Del Potro said he never thought he would train someone to play a tennis match in space.

The lack of gravity on the space station forced the astronauts to play on tiny tennis rackets the soft and squishy tennis ball over the net. According to Gordon Smith, executive director of the United States Tennis Association, the devices used by the astronauts were designed to be safe as they do not want to break windows or anything else.

Earlier, Feustel predicted that the tennis game will be in place as played in the old video game Pong. Fechtel's prophecy came true as the protagonists used the salvo more often than waiting for the ball. The astronauts swam around fighting to stay upright to hit the ball in the right direction. After a heated battle, Feustel and Arnold emerged victorious in the historic first tennis showdown in space.

Future tennis games in space possible

After the game, Feustel emphasized that playing tennis in space was a difficult task, a bit cumbersome after playing in zero gravity. Feustel also recommended children who experienced the first tennis match in space to stay fit, focus on their dreams and goals, and shoot for the stars.

Smith, in turn, was pleased with the coexistence of space and tennis, calling it a cool thing and innovative. Smith hopes that in the future many tennis games in space will be held. A regular competition on board the ISS could become a regular thing. Smith added that it is a cool idea to make astronauts the best tennis player in space.
